Review: Probably excellent for aquariums, good not great for off-label odor-removal uses - Bought this so I could de-perfume a secondhand dresser I bought. I think it did a fair job, although I did set the drawers out in the sun so that did a lot of the work. One drawer has been resistant. However, I also had a plastic spray bottle that I'd previously put mint oil in when spraying to deter insects (mint oil spray: moderately effective) and had been unable to get the mint smell out of. I filled it with a third of a cup (sprayer holds about 2 cups) of charcoal and seems to be very effective. So, I think you would need a lot to de-stink a drawer, but this does work like the fancy charcoal being sold. Someone had mentioned that you should buy the charcoal powder. However, it *is* charcoal so black dust will get everywhere, be careful. Finally, I am using this off label so I don't want to give it fewer stars for that reason. I am sure it is good for aquariums.
Review: Reasonable price for a good product - Small enough without falling out of the media bags. Appears to be working very well reducing the smell and cloudiness in the water

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can this be used in a water filtration system? (For people not fish).**
A: Yes. I used it for years. I filtered drinking water as it was produced from a water distiller. If it does not kill fish it will not harm you either.

**Q: how much carbon should I put in my 40 gallon tank**
A: depends on water volume and bioload. good general rule is 1 tablespoon carbon to 10 gal. of total system volume on a light-moderately loaded tank/system. change every 10-14 days. adjust to taste ;). remember-main function is to remove tinting organics-not a replacement for water changes overall. from a long time pro aquarist and hobbyist.

**Q: We have marineland penguin power filter w/ multi-stage filtration. how much of this carbon do i put on a 50 gal. tank?**
A: From Marineland's webpage, it looks like some Penguin doesn't have a refillable filter cartridge for carbon. The carbon is placed in a refillable filter cartridge. Do not put the carbon directly into the tank. Look inside the Penguin for a rectangular grey colored "basket-like" object. Remove it and press a tab on the filter to open it. Replace the existing expended carbon material with the fresh Black Diamond Media. Reconfigure the cartridge and rinse it in fresh water to remove carbon dust. Replace it in your Penguin and wait a day or two for the water to clear. Good luck.

**Q: When using this to make better cat litter: If it's pebbles, wouldn't it get scooped out when you scoop the litter? Do you pulverize it before mixing?**
A: Hello Kevin,I'm not sure I would recommend either. In the simplest terms most activated carbon is a coal product that has been baked. That's near as organic as you can get but don't lose sight of how many metals occur in the same space as a coal vein. Some of the cheaper carbons available are notoriously high in iron. This happens to be one of the better carbons in the category.Iron is not something you want in your reef so I have a habit of running a magnet around the jar before I use it and I've never had a jar of this that had much move.So from the standpoint of could this hurt my cat I don't have much concern.BUT......Carbon is dirty. This being a pelleted carbon it is less dusty than granular versions but do you want your cat sitting in or scratching on something that will leave a residual black stain that can then be dragged around the house?Pulverizing it would only make it far more dusty.Though I think this is a fine product for filtering water which is what it is manufactured for I think there are better products available for controlling odors in cat litter. If you have your heart set on using this for that purpose then I would think putting it a net bag or cutting up some old panty hose and keeping it secured that way and putting it in the corner of the litter box would be the way to go.That way you could also rinse it under cold water once in the bag and let it air dry for a day before using.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works as it should!
*by R***R on March 23, 2026*

I love this. Its cheap and comes with a lot! I can keep refilling my filter net. I do this monthly so its perfect to have a big amount! Recommended for sure! Be sure to rinse in water after adding to filter net because it will release dark dust from the rocks.
