READ THIS FIRST - replacement is not a hot swap
1-STAR readers......read this first.I'm in no way associated with the manufacturer of this device. I'm just a regular buyer. I had seen posts of people saying the drive doesn't work....IT DOES......you just have to understand you can't just swap out Disc Drive units....you must transfer the board inside of the drive. There is a fantastic YouTube video from 2009 that shows the entire process. If you're not good or comfortable working with electronic boards and ribbon cables find a friend to help. It's not a hard process it's just tedious. If you plan on just swapping out the disk drives in their metal cases then you will experience every single 1-star negative review you see here. It's not because the drive is bad, it's because you didn't follow the process that works. Nintendo did something to stop us from swapping, you MUST use the old board from the original Disk Drive for the WiiU to accept it.Don't try moving over the motor, then the laser, then other components.....just follow the YouTube Video up to the part when you open the Disk Drive. From the ORIGINAL unit, unscrew the 3 screws holding it in, undo all the cables then remove the circuit/controller board. Do the same to the NEW drive you just bought. Then install the Original board into the the NEW drive. Put everything back together and you're done.I hope this helps people. Don't feel frustrated as if the drive you have is junk or for the wrong country code. You just have to take the additional steps to swap the controller boards. These dri

Must Transfer Circuit Board from Wii U Drive for this to Work
This product is a brand new, original OEM Blu-ray drive for Nintendo Wii U. However, because of Nintendo's "security features" that are designed to prevent you from repairing the unit, you must remove the case from your new and old disc drives and replace the new drive circuit board with the old circuit board that came with your original, broken Wii U drive. This is because Nintendo "marries" your Wii U with the circuit board on the original disc drive. While the drive is fully functional, that way you is programmed not to recognize it unless the ID from the original disc drive circuit board matches.Obviously, people want plug and play. I would certainly prefer it myself. That is simply not possible with the Wii U, thanks to Nintendo and their "anti-tampering" measures. If you are going to replace the drive, this is the part you need, and there are YouTube videos to walk you through this process. If you're not up for it, there is a rebuilt Wii U unit on Amazon selling for under $200. You may also be able to find a used Console on eBay.

It works.
Is NOT plug and play. As posted by others you have to use existing board with the replacement but it is fairly easy to do. Worked like a charm.

Excellent
I bought this to replace the drive in my Wii U. It came securely packaged so no damage was done. I was worried it would not make it thru the mail. Works perfectly.

Disk drive is not for USA region.
This disk drive must be for a region other than the USA. The logic board needs to be swapped from the old drive to the new drive so that the WiiU recognizes the drive. However the ribbon cable on the new drive is a different width than the old drive and is too small to fit properly in the old logic board. The drive will accept disks when installed with the old logic board but still gives the same invalid disk error. Very disappointing because everything else works on my WiiU. I just need a new disk drive to be able to play disk games again. Also the tool provided is a star drive pattern not the Tri tip pattern shown on the ad. The star drive tool is useless as nothing on the disk drive or the WiiU uses a star drive screw. Only Phillips screws are used in the disk drive and both Phillips and Tri tip pattern screws are on the WiiU.

Not a swap for swap replacement, but works
if you can watch a video to swap the drive board with your original Wii U disk drive, then the disk replacement I got was perfect. Comes with T screwdriver which makes taking screws out easier. Took about an hour after watching videos.

Arrived Damaged
When the product arrived, it came in a bag that was way too small to even hold the product, which is why it was already open. Then when I opened it, the frame was completely bent

Good OEM part
So I got one of these to replace the broken one in my Wii U and it’s definitely an OEM part. However, be aware that it’s not as easy as just swapping it out - I learned this the hard way. Basically Nintendo somehow pairs up parts to the motherboard in the Wii U - meaning if you just swap out drives, you’ll get an error code and the Wii U won’t work. What you’ll need to do is open up your old broken drive and take out the logic board that’s housed under the laser. So you need to look up tutorials on how to do this. Once you do that, it’ll work just like new though.
