Do you have to use the easy bake mixes? can you cook in this from scratch?

Absolutely you can cook from scratch. The question is: can the child cook from scratch? The mixes put the kid in control.The fact my kids COULD manage the mixes themselves, gave them confidence! My daughter actually started out with this little Barbie set where she could cut out little pieces of bread and turn them into "cakes" by frosting them. She was just so proud. Now she can whip out 6 pies for Thanksgiving from scratch, no prob. But the trick is to let the kids feel they are in charge ... that they can figure it out without Mom telling them what to do. So having the little packets to mix up and follow directions is, I think, important. My daughter graduated to frying up eggs not long after she was doing EZBake cakes. She asked me to make her a fried egg, and I said I'd do it in about half an hour, but if she was in a hurry, do it herself! She got up on a little stepstool and did just that (no, I wasn't far away). She started doing pancakes too, by following the pancake mix instructions. Which weren't too different from the EZBake ones, just a bit more batter. She loved it when other family members actually liked the results (some of her experiments were, uh, well, experiments). Anyway, I say whatever gets the kid into the kitchen is good. Being able to cook your own awesome food is a kind of superpower. You aren't dependent on the fast-food places or the prepared-food in the supermarkets ... you can take a few easy ingredients and make something wonderful.

Why does this cost $30 more than the other ones and includes nothing extra?

Baking Star edition? Also, the Ultimate has a built-in heating element as opposed to a lightbulb. Guessing that’s the difference(?)
