K-1000 - has an all-yellow comparator for Cl/Br and uses orthotolidine (OT) as the reagent. K-1001 - has a pink comparator for Cl/Br and uses DPD as the reagent. There are differences between OT and DPD but I have trouble matching the colors and so personally I would go with the pink one (K-1001 using DPD) because it looks easier to distinguish the colors. All the yellows on the K-1000 comparator look too close for my eyes. **Q: do the test blocks ever need replacing because of color changes?** A: Mine are over four years old and still fine. If they're stored in their box, I don't think the colors will change. **Q: What are the expiration dates of these?** A: About a year. One season to another. **Q: I can't find the kit that costs about $15 that includes total alkalinity, only the way too big $49 kit and this one. Is it online anywhere?** A: The Taylor K-1000 basic kit is what I use to test alkalinity.
