No, it's too bulky to use while sleeping on your back. I recently had a lower back injury and I tried sleeping with this lumbar cushion under my back. I tolerated it for a few seconds only, it's much too bulky for that purpose.

This Lumbar Cushion is not compressed in its original packaging, it is at its full size. So, yes, it would fit in the box in which it came, if you had to return it.
