does each button have different tones?

Yes, each button has different tones so you know if it is the back or front door. However, I have been experiencing problems with mine. If the person who is ringing the door bell does not hold down the button for a few seconds, the signal will not transmit to the receiver. Other than that, the tone is loud enough, but over all I have not been a really satisfied with it.

What is the width of the ringer? My door frame is only 1” wide.

The push button is approximately 1 inch wide

On the device that plugs in, could the faceplate be removed to paint it another color?

Yes it can be removed. But the door bell does't ring all time, not happy with it.

Has anybody ever had a problem with this doorbell ringing on its own?

Only one of the doorbells worked with consistency.
