Euan Uglow: The Complete Paintings

A must buy for the contemporary figurative artist.
This is the one book contemporary figurative and realist artists should get. It helps answers the question - where to go with the figure and realism- how to bring it into the 21st century.Often those who love painting the figure are stopped by the daunting tasks of making it relevant, modern but still beautiful. Uglow has managed this with his exploration of color and challenging poses (for the model I am sure as well). This is visual documentation that shows that aesthetically powerful figurative work need not regurgitate the cliched poses and trite presentations of the French Academy which mars so much of the new Classical Realism revival- but points to new directions and challenges. Uglow does not dispense with exquisite drawing- his foundation is sound- thanks to his training with William Coldstream. It is also a beautifully presented book with gorgeous reproductions and useful close-ups that help reveal his painting style. The book is not ruined as so many are, with pseudo physiological ruminations on why he painted what he painted but include small delicious discussions based on conversations with the artist, models or friends who remembered particular paintings and their procedures. He painted lovely and intriguing, still-lifes, florals and landscapes as well. There is a lot of useful insights for the modern painter, especially one still interested in painting in a naturalistic manner.Art books are expensive- especially for usually lint-lined pockets of so many artists, but this one is worth every cent.

An Extraordinary Monograph: The Complete Euan Uglow
Euan Uglow was somewhat of an hermetic character with his art. Not inclined toward exhibitions or even interviews during his lifetime, his brilliance as a painter is only now being widely acknowledged by a more international public. This splendid monograph offers intelligent essays by both Richard Kendall who delves into the pertinent period in the artist life - 1950 - 1970- while Catherine Lampert surveys the content of Uglow's paintings and his gradual involvement in his appreciation for color and light that made his later works even more refined than the earlier (and at times more fascinatingly introspective) paintings. But the glory of this fine book from Yale University Press is the inclusion of ALL of the known paintings of this phenomenal artist - a feat rarely achieved in monographs of contemporary painters. Euan Uglow was equally at home with landscapes and his luminous still lifes as he was with the figure. But for this viewer it is his cascade of eloquent yet quietly simple nudes that remain in the mind's eye, acting as a reference point when viewing the work of today's figurative artists. The authors are wise to emphasize such masterworks as the early 'Standing Nude', a female model standing next to a geometrically interesting heater that Uglow somehow uses as a reference point for his observation of the chunks of the body; his pastoral 'Musicians' that incorporates his love of landscape painting with his appreciation of the figure; his 'Slade Nude against Green Screen'; 'Nude of an Italian Girl' described by the artists' friends as 'one of his grandest and most sensual nudes'; and his incomprehensibly beautiful 'Beautiful Girl Lying Down', a painting where all of his palette knife like brushstrokes give way to smooth molding of the skin producing one of the finest nude portraits in his career.Yet his landscapes and still lifes have a special resonance peculiar to Euan Uglow's vision. Compositionally these works create questions in the viewer's eye while satisfying the celebration of color and form ('Peach with Blue Vase' is an excellent example). This well designed and conceived book includes sketches for his paintings and the little bits of evidential inspiration that help us to appreciate more fully just what a master was Euan Uglow. This is one of the finest monographs yet published about a 'contemporary' painter and it destined to become a collectors' item. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 10

Great for the encyclopedic value! Not so much for the quality.
Great complete book. Many small reproductions and the colors are much darker than reproductions in the Browse and Darby books. The only complaint is this lack of finesse with the reproductions... a sad missed detail for a painter who deserves the best treatment possible.

I WISH I loved this book....
I wanted so much to love this book... I was introduced to this artist when I fell in love with his painting "Dawn Martin"... If I could own any painting at this time in my life... it would be "Dawn Martin"... but this image was quite small in the book. So many of the paintings that were my favorites were very small. And I certainly would not have chosen the ones that were picked for full page images. And there were VERY few full page images... Euan Uglow is an amazing artist, no doubt about it... but this book was just not put together well and did not truly showcase his range in an attractive manner. It might be a complete collection, but I'm just not willing to spend over $100.00 for this book... As I said, I really did want to like it.... half that much might be reasonable....

This painter is a find. There is new in figurative painting
An amazing painter that nobody has heard of. All I can say is I wished I knew about him years ago. His understanding of space, mass and solidity in his work is enthralling. A painter's painter.

Good choice!
There aren't very many collections of his work. This book has been an inspiration and a lot of fun. There aren't very many artists who can devote three years for the image of a toothbrush standing in front of a mirror and fascinating anyone who looks!

Stunning Catalogue
I first became aware of Euan Uglow in the early 70's, with a reproduction of one of his pear paintings which looked stunning, but completely out of date at the time. It's funny how things change and figurative artists are now becoming more interesting and possibly more valued. Uglow is associated with the nude and there are plenty of wonderful reproductions here - good quality and even some quite small reproductions are easily readable due to the simplifications employed in their making. All of his work is sensuous; not just the nudes, but also and, most surprisingly, his landsacapes and still life paintings. Some of the landscapes are a revelation, more so because they are mere holiday pieces, forming a natural break from his more recognised works. The still life paintings are sumptuous and everything in the catalogue is measured, calculated, one might say systematised, but in a way that is far from sterile or formulaic because they are simply life-like in that they create a life for themselves; one that, on the one hand are as simple as cartoons, but on the other, are multi-layered, complex and tangible. Uglow is a "one off," exceptional artist and this catalogue is probably a definitive statement of his life, work and, one might say, genius. It really isn't cheap, but the production quality is very good and the price is probably worth every penny.
