Best of the Early Stooges
This volume was missing from my collection. The early Stooges were the best with Curly and you got to see the original jokes that were repeated many times in the later shorts. "An Ache in Every Stake" was the one shorts I was missing. If you buy one Stooges volume, buy this one.

More Nyuks For Your Bucks!
This Three Stooges box set collects 3 of their best DVDs, for a total of 19 shorts. "CURLY CLASSICS" has 6 shorts, starting with their very first one from 1934, "Woman Haters." It's also unique in that the entire short is done in rhyme. "Men In Black" features the stooges as doctors whose motto is, for duty and humanity! It's one of their best and was even nominated for an Academy Award. "Three Little Pigskins" finds the stooges mistaken for star college football players, and is notable for featuring a blonde Lucille Ball. "A Plumbing We Will Go" shows the stooges to be three of the best plumbers who ever plumbed! As with many of their shorts with Curly, it was later remade with Shemp. In "Punch Drunks" Curly pops off whenever he hears Pop Goes The Weasel and punches his way to the heavyweight boxing championship. "Micro-Phonies" is hilarious, with Curly in drag as Senorita Cucaracha, and Moe and Larry as Senor Mucho and Senor Gusto. It's my all-time favorite Curly short subject."All The World's A Stooge" has 7 shorts. The title short has the stooges disguised as children who are going to be adopted by a wealthy couple. "Violent Is The Word For Curly" does NOT involve him as a boxer or a wrestler. In fact, the stooges go from gas station attendants to being mistaken for visiting professors at Mildew College for Women. This short features them doing the classic song Swinging The Alphabet. In "Three Dumb Clucks" the stooges try to stop their father (played by Curly with sideburns) from marrying a young gold-digger, whose gangster friends plan to kill him for his money shortly after the wedding. This short was also redone later with Shemp to great effect. In "Grips, Grunts And Groans" Curly goes ballistic whenever he smells a certain perfume, which Moe and Larry use when Curly has to take the place of a drunken wrestler. In "Uncivil War Birds" Curly joins the Confederate army while Moe and Larry join the Union forces. Amazingly, the country survived this conflict! "Back To The Woods" features the stooges as palefaces dealing with Indians in one of their weaker efforts. In "Three Little Pirates," the shipwrecked stooges must don disguises and use their wits (speaking gibberish) to escape from the governor of Dead Man's Island."Spook Louder" has 6 shorts, 1 with Curly and 5 with Shemp. The title short finds Curly and company as traveling salesmen who end up at the mansion of an eccentric inventor. It ends by answering the burning question, who's throwing those pies? "Fright Night" is Shemp's first short with Moe and Larry. Shemp's sparring with the boxer Chopper is priceless. (What's good for a fractured skull?) "Shivering Sherlocks" finds the stooges falsely accused of being bank robbers. The best scene is in the police station when they take the lie detector test. "Hokus Pokus" finds the stooges hypnotized by the Great Svengarlic and walking out on a flagpole high above the ground. Look out below! My personal favorite is "The Ghost Talks." The stooges must remove furniture from spooky, old Smorgasbord Castle, including a suit of armor. They discover that the suit is inhabited by the ghost of Peeping Tom. He does not want to be moved from his ancient home and he does his best to scare them away, although Shemp scares himself just by looking in the mirror! "Mummy's Dummies" is set in Ancient Egypt and features the stooges as used chariot salesmen. They stick the King's palace guard with a lemon and are taken to the palace to be executed. They are spared when they cure the King's toothache. They also save the day by uncovering a plot against the King and recovering stolen tax money. The grateful King rewards them with his daughter's hand in marriage. Since the daughter is unattractive, Moe and Larry volunteer Shemp to be her husband.

The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 3: 1940-1942
Volume 3 in the Three Stooges Collection is another excellent presentation of their shorts. Moe, Larry & Curly do it all to comedy; Curly, in particular, shows off his comedic genius. The two disc set has 23 shorts from 1940 through 1942. Sony has done an excellent job in remastering these shorts which is incredible considering the age of the product. Sony needs to be commended for releasing these shorts in chronological order. The set opens with "You Nazty Spy" which is a short that takes place in the Kingdom of Moronica. The Stooges do a take-off on the Axis leaders (with supporting help), Moe does a great send up of Hitler. They are hired to rescue the king & put him back in power. The highlight of the set is "A Plumbing We Will Go" where the Stooges make a complete wreck of a house. Their piping skills has Curly trapped in the midst of pipes, faucets turning in place, water from lighting fixtures & water crashing out of a television set. There are many who think this particular short is the Stooges ultimate short & it's hard to disagree.Other shorts that deserve mentioning are "How High Is Up?" in which they work in constructing a skyscraper. "Cuckoo Cavaliers" where they open a beauty salon in Mexico. "Boobs in Arms" where they make a shambles out of the Army. In "I'll Never Heil Again" they repeat their roles in the Kingdom of Moronica. In this short the Stooges are over the top in their portrayal of Axis leaders. When Curly takes Moe's moustache (Moe does an incredible Hitler) Moe hollers, "Give me back my personality!" "Cactus Makes Perfect" finds the Stooges out west looking for a gold mine with Curly's gold seeking arrow. "What's the Matador" has them portraying bullfighter & bull. There aren't any bonus features & there isn't any subtitles available either. But there's no shortage of laughs as the Stooges yuk it up better than most.

The Old West will never be the same...
This one has been a personal favorite of mine ever since I was a kid. "The Outlaws Is Coming" was the Stooges' final starring movie, and its humor anticipates the western satire that was yet to come with later films such as "Blazing Saddles".Like another Stooge movie classic, "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules", the script doesn't take itself too seriously, not only firing jokes at Westerns, but at musical phenomenoms as well (the Stooges' pet skunk is named "Elvis"; a mop-topped Chinaman with a guitar sings "Three Blind Mice"; and one of the outlaws is named Johnny "Ringo", complete with screaming women right out of Beatlemania!).Here, we get a pre-Batman Adam West filling the shoes of the typically timid Easterner who can barely hold a gun, much less shoot one. Nancy Kovack provides a counter-contrast to West's character as sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Stooge veteran Emil Sitka is on hand as well, along with a pre-Laugh-In Henry Gibson, who nearly steals the show as the Indian Chief's hip-jive talking son.My favorite scene in the film is the "big showdown", in which West must face off against a band of legendary gunslingers--who (believe it or not) are made fools of because the Stooges poured super-strong printing glue into their holsters! These "fearless men" struggle ridiculously in the city street as they try to extricate their guns from their hips, with hilarious effect. It's definitely fun to watch, and one of the film's highlights. As with other Stooge films, this one succeeds as well because it's all done with a satirical wink while giving Moe, Larry & Curly Joe room to do their stuff. Not a bad film for one of the great comedy acts to ride off into the sunset on!

Remarkable Quality
Not having been a fan of the Stooges for very long I'll leave it to others to comment on the art -- or just plain fun -- of their 25 years of filmmaking. What amazes me about this collection is the technical quality. I have seen very few DVDs of film even 30 years old that have this quality. The video is absolutely pristine, crisp, steady, black and white. I've watched several hours without seeing a piece of dust or a speck of white or black out of place. The tone of the images is steady with zero fluctuation and absolute clarity right to the edges. It's absolutely perfect. The sound is clear and even. Someone put a huge amount of time and love into this project! The attention to quality continues in the packaging. Sturdy slipcases for each volume hold 2 or 3 single disk transparent slim cases. The cover inserts are printed on both sides so the inside of the case has full art -- a rarity these days. The inside art has scenes and title cards from the shorts on the disk, and the image on the disk matches the part of the insert that's under the disk. Maybe it's not rocket science, but it takes time, effort and care...something we don't see a whole lot of in mass market disk production.

anything less than 5 stars would be a travesty-and let me tell you why!
if you already know of the three stooges you wont need me to tell you how great they were/are-but you should be made aware that this current collection released by sony-this being the third chapter-is by far the ultimate/definative collection-all of the classic shorts released uncut/remastered and in release order-this chapter sees all of the shorts released between 1940 and 1942-all 23 of them on 2 discs-picture and sound quality is excellent-of course this series is only available currently on region 1-so you will need a multi region dvd player to view these gems-hopefully these classics will soon make there way to region 2
