The NES Omnibus: The Nintendo Entertainment System and Its Games, Volume 1 (A–L)

A truly excellent book
This is a truly excellent book. In full disclosure, I’m one of a number of contributing writers to it. But lest this seem like a biased review, my contributions added up to perhaps 1% of the book (if even that), and had I never written them, I still would have loved the other 99% of it, just being an old school Nintendo fan who enjoys reading about the games I loved as a kid. Brett covers every game for the NES in alphabetical order from A-L (the book would have been too large had all games been included, so M-Z is in a forthcoming Volume 2), and includes voluminous details about each title, plus reviews, screenshots and more. It’s all fascinating stuff, even the sections about ultra-familiar games like Contra and Castlevania, and drew me in so quickly that I literally read it cover to cover the first day Brett handed me a copy. (And then I bought more copies on Amazon to give to family and friends.) There are many retrospective video game books out there these days, including other comprehensive NES tomes such as those by Chris Scullion and Pat Contri, both of which I also enjoyed. But Brett’s book goes into much greater detail on each game than these, and while the coffee-table size and price may not be for everyone, I think fans of the NES, and classic video games in general, will find it well worth their while.

A definitive work for all NES fans!
Brett Weiss has been writing amazing Video Game compendiums for years. Ever since I stumbled upon his SNES Omnibus, I have been a fan. This one does NOT dissapoint! I like to read these kinds of books cover to cover, and Weiss fills this with interesting reviews, anecdotes and facts on every game in the NES Library (in this case A - L). The quality of the hardcover is great and everything is nicely laid out. I can't wait for the next volume coming in 2021. I also suggest that anyone interested in video game history or collecting check out his other books.

Awesome Book, Love the layout and use of space. It's fun to thumb through.
My husband really enjoys the NES Omnibus Vol 1 (for $37), Loves the layout and use of space. It's fun to thumb through. He has read several various pages and feels the writing, info, shared experiences, etc is good as well.

The True "Ultimate" Nintendo NES Encyclopedia
Like Weiss' prior releases, the SNES Omnibuses Vol 1 & 2, The NES Omnibus Volume 1 is the most thorough and appealing guide to the NES Library that's available today. Covering games from A-L, author, Brett Weiss, provides extensive descriptions, screen shots and other details on on every licensed and unlicensed game released for the system. Many of the games also include personal stories from various members of the retro game and YouTube communities, to accentuate that particular game. The clean, clear layout of each page...and every single game gets at least one full page of coverage....is extremely easy and appealing to read, much different from other books on the same subject, which are so cluttered and "busy" that it takes away from overall experienceThis isn't an arbitrary review book. This is an encyclopedia, where Brett Weiss covers each and every game, in a fair and unbiased manner. Overall, as a lover of all retro video games, I have to say that this is by far the best compilation available for the Nintendo Entertainment System, today.Papa Pete

Very good
After getting & reading every page of both SNES Omnibus books, I was stoked for these. And it mostly doesn't disappoint. SNES I have more nostalgia for, but it's still fun to see the weird & wonderful 8-bit titles from the wild west days of gaming. Strange choice though: in the SNES books, every game cartridge is shown (profile and top-down views). In this, almost no cartridges are shown. Why? I mean if NONE were shown I'd get it, but why just a few? Also wish we'd get more insider insights from those who made the games, that's always the best part. Nitpicks aside, I highly recommend

Awesome Book!
It's quite an amazing book and read, something that keeps me engaged to learn more and want to seek out. Games are a thing I fell in love with at the young age of 5. So to have an idea of what games really made me love video games, well it's so worth it. I probably wouldn't care where the game came from or when it was invented, but now I do.A book that is about what one can learn and know more about, well that is quite exciting to me now. So that is what brings me to this book. I wasn't able to learn about all the NES back in my days. However, I am getting more than I would if I searched online in this well-researched and organized book on games. Being the first volume, I am so excited for the second!

More than a Review: This is for Collectors and Fans
A genuine blessing from start to finish. While this is only the first volume, it scratches an itch that goes far beyond the idea of NES information. Each games has a story, and the story is more than just creation - it’s our own experiences, and Brett’s book delves into the stories of countless individuals who discuss the importance of these games their lives and the impact that every last one of them had on someone. The wait for Volume 2 has me absolutely giddy, because it’s like reaching deep down into the brains of everyone who has ever loved classic gaming and getting the chance to see them light up in their own ways.Amazing quality, terrific layout, and a must for anyone who simply wants to have the history and anecdotes at their fingertips.

A beautiful catalogue
If you love games enough to read a page or two about each and you don’t mind reading about a bunch of games you’d never play this book is for you. It’s also a good way to discover some treasures you missed and read about the ones you didn’t.
