It's from end to end of the main shaft, not including the actual spring-pin part at each end. It's the actual physical distance between the two holes on the watch, and I measured the one I had remaining and it was 22 and that's what I ordered and they fit. Hopefully this helps people determine which ones they might actually need. So, I purchased these, cut the tiniest sliver off each silicon band with a razor blade (very easy to do) popped these into the bands and now I can change my watch bands in a matter of seconds.
