do you turn the cane in one direction to keep it up when gate is closed? If not what keeps it in the up position? Do I need to purchase addl hook?

The cane has a bump on the shaft that slides through a notch in the upper guide, so when you lift and rotate the handle the bump sits on the upper guide. (Rotating it back so the bump "falls" through the notch lowers the bolt) While shown horizontal, it's use is primarily vertical. It is well built and a substantial piece of stainless steel.
