## Overview

The Thames & Kosmos Nanotechnology Science Experiment Kit offers 41 hands-on experiments and a 72-page manual to explore the science of structures sized 1 to 100 nanometers. This award-winning STEM kit enables users to understand nanoparticles’ forms and real-world applications—from self-cleaning paints to medical coatings—using models, laser visualization, and practical experiments designed for youth aged 12 and up.

## Description

Some of the biggest scientific breakthroughs in recent years involve things that are ACTUALLY very, very small. The science of nanotechnology deals with the smallest structures, in the range of one to 100 nanometers in size. That's as small as just a few atoms in a row (one Atom corresponds to about one nanometer)! with this kit, The intangible, nanosomic world becomes accessible with hands-on experiments using both scaled-up models and real nanomaterials. Nanoparticle can be made of different materials and exist in a wide variety of forms -thin layers, tubes, balls, and tree-like structures. These particles can be coated onto surfaces, They can enhance other materials such as paint, They can be used as a delivery method for pharmaceuticals in the body, and much more. Specific applications include, for example, self-cleaning house paints and water-repellent clothes, anti-fog coatings on glasses, UV protection Components in sunscreen, antifouling coatings for ships (to prevent algae growth, thereby reducing fuel consumption), coatings for medical devices, and materials to more effectively filter dirty water. Start out by conducting experiments concerning size, scale, and orders of magnitude in the international system of units, to get a feel for just how small a nanometer really is. Stir up some mixtures and suspensions, and then examine exotic mixtures to learn about the nanosomic particles suspended in them. Shine A laser through a colloidal Gold - a suspension of nanoscale particles of gold! Learn about the electromagnetic spectrum, laser light, Electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy to begin to grasp how we can make nanomaterials visible. Experiment with a special material that mimics the nanostructures on a gecko's footpads that allow it to climb straight up a Vertical pane of glass with ease! - a parents' Choice Gold award winner.

Review: Five Stars - great
Review: My Kids Rated this 4.5 Stars - This is a wonderful kit demonstrating the science behind small (nano) particles, and how the chemical properties of the nanoparticles can translate into (larger) real world effects or applications. The Nanotechnology Experiment Manual is the real star of this set, and it contains 72 pages full of well-defined projects (42 actual experiments) and information helping your child (the box says age 15+, but my kids are 10 and 12, and are enjoying this) understand the significance of the reactions observed in the "What's Happening?" sections per experiment. This kit does need occasional adult supervision, because it contains some chemicals and processes that require protective gear (you provide yourself- like gloves or safety goggles) or assistance (working w flames). This kit has numerous experiments that are fairly short by themselves- 10 to 30 min, but which cumulatively can take many days to a week(s) to properly complete and understand, depending on how motivated your child is. The book and exercises could be a jr. high- high school chemistry-lite class...with a fun teacher. My kids went through the introductory section of this kit so far, reading about the first-aid and ground rules for safety information, completing the check-list to determine if their kit was complete (yes), and setting up their laser pointer w provided batteries. They then completed three experiments this evening, so far, and were running back to the set to continue after dinner. I asked my kids to rate their experience at this point, and they both think it's a 4.5, because, "it's cool," "it has a lot of interesting things," (poking at me with the included gecko footpad-inspired sticky pad), "you actually learn stuff from it- the experiments are fun." The deduction of 1/2 a star from my daughter, was due to not having an ink cartridge for one of the experiments, from which you're supposed to remove five drops of ink (i didn't want them to take apart our printer cartridge and make a mess- i guess that's more my fault than the kit). My son also deducted 1/2 a star, because he didn't like that one of the experiments could kill Club Moss spores, which would have been alive, he felt, upon rehydration (experiment #16- putting a thin layer of spores on water to form a waterproof layer), but which could then be harmed if you added oil or dish soap (the limits of nano-coating for waterproofing applications- experiment 20). They did experiment #16, and dumped the water-moss spore mix in our yard, because they wanted the moss to have a chance at life. All in all, i can see that my kids love this- they are busily reading the book and trying the experiments even now as i type. i'm pleased, because they are occupied, having fun, and learning new concepts. I am sitting right next to them, however, and asking questions about their experiment and progress. I told them to let me know which project they are doing before they start. I would not leave my kids alone with this kit at this point, but supervised, it is fine.

### ⭐⭐⭐ Not many supplies!
*by S***D on December 28, 2022*

My son likes this, but for the price we expected more. The information provided in the book was great, but the experiments are simple. My son is 11, and it was fine for him. Not sure why the age rating is 15+.
