Tango: Theory on cinema and light
Carlos Saura's "Tango" is a film about the making of a film. It is Saura's own personal view as a director and filmmaker. It is also a conversation piece about lighting. All of Vittorio Storaro's theories about light -as he has written in his 3 splendid and interesting books, Scrivere con la luce-, are put in practice here. Tango is metacinema. No wonder, the camera has such an important part in the beginning, middle and final scenes. The discourse about film is tied to the plot and perfectly woven as a tango dance. It shows us not only a love story, as in the tango lyrics, but also a story about Argentina, its history and cultural expressions through music. Although Saura has preferred instrumental music, the lyrics -for tango connaisseurs- are narratives about every aspect of human relations; also, against social injustice and love for the country. Tango is the music of the melting pot; a product of cultural hibridism or mestizaje. Knowing this, Saura establishes a parallelism between tango and film, as both are products of collective work and an art form.Tango by Carlos Saura is, indeed, one of the best films of the 90's and the music and choreography, are superb!!!

Lots of great dance with a smidgen of story, worth seeing.
I purchased this video so that I could use some clips from it for my 8th grade Spanish course. I couldn't show the film in it's entirety to my students because it is PG-13, but I would have been comfortable showing it to any teenager. The film includes a wide variety of Tango dances and music. My students were not as enamored with the film as I, but it is pretty darn good, if a bit artsy. This is to be expected however since the story is about a movie director making a film about Tango. The focus of this film is on the music and dance, but there are moments of real storytelling that address issues of wanting to forget the past, producers trying to control directors, and the power of artistic expression.

Excellent cinematography, a motion picture art piece
Tango is an amazing movie in its exceptional combination of dance, music, camera technique, color, mirrors, and lighting. At several points in this movie I thought to myself: "Wow, this lighting/camera perspective is perfect, why don't we see more of this in movies?" After watching the movie once, I found myself immediately going back to re-watch some specific scenes just like one may be drawn back to an especially interesting piece of art.The plot of this movie *is not* what makes this a great picture, although it does effectively tie together the various scenes and the overall context of the film. What makes this a great film are the actors/actresses, dance numbers, music, and cinematography. The english subtitles were clear and easy to read at all times.Overall a very different and entertaining movie... Recommended.

Product & service top-notch!
As usual with Amazon and this source (20adhoc07), everything was excellent. The movie that I ordered "Tango" is one of several that address the dance in significant ways.

poor
Horrible letdown. Just voiceovers, and very dull ones at that, of a 'guide' and a dancer. The beautiful shots of Buenos Aires can't save this dismal attempt at presenting the mighty tango. Can't hold a candle to Saura's CARMEN.

Good, but not great
This film was good, not great. Also, the all-encompassing title "Tango" suggests a historical account, which the film mostly is. However, it neglected to credit the Afro Argentinian and Afro Cuban contribution to this Art form, apart from a fleeting suggestion that greatness in dance, music, and tango dancing might necessarily be the result of African genes.Film makers who claim to document events or art history have a moral obligation to give a truthful and accurate account. Thus, to leave out the contributions of Africans, African dance and music, especially because Africans were brutally treated and continue to be severely oppressed, is unforgivable.

it was worth waiting for it
I have been waiting for this video for almost two years -- that is I believe the time when I search in Amazon and many other places for this product --- you can imagine how pleased I was when I saw it advertised on Amazon a few weeks ago --- thank you again

Tango
Very good DVD on Tangos.....yes, a genuine tango "sound" is you have to have Bandoneons sometimes three or seven I have seen. I have made a ten tune "tango roll" for my Nickelodeon.....also 'have been to Buenos Aires. Some large Orchestras (without bandoneons) in the past have played the Classic Tango tunes, but it does not sound the same....there is no Tango beat....you have to have that "sound" using the Bandoneons.
