Finally, an understandable version of this book!
I always avoided Beowulf. But homeschooling we needed to read this. It was understandable for middle school, and probably ok for an older middle school reader to read. I read it to my co-op class made up of a 4th grader, 5th grader, 7th grader, and 9th grader. They enjoyed it, but the younger ones did find a lot of words they didn't understand so I did explain a lot of things. Fascinating story though. I am glad I finally read this without having to read that long, difficult original version!

Great Version!
I am a teacher (1st and 2nd grades) and I have been reading the story of Beowulf to my students. I highly recommend this version! It is quite readable, but has "juicy" words, lots of alliteration, and is really well-done!Don't let the age of my students fool you! I think students of all ages would like this book. Yes, it's a touch hard for my students, but they are really enjoying it. We are presently near the end (of Beowulf and of the dragon he is fighting!)If you are looking for a good version to read for your kids (or one for yourself), get this one. It's truly a pleasure to read out loud as well!

Hwaet! We have heard this edition is not poetic enough but...
My son and I had watched the ITV series, "Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands", and I wanted him to experience a story much closer to the original. This version covered all the major parts of the story in a very accessible manner for a 10-year old. While some reviewers felt the prose of this edition wasn't up to the standards of others, I thought the occasional alliteration and poetic terms were a nod to the poem's past while not obfuscating the meaning for a young reader. The author also chose the right parts of the story to omit (some of the backstory and political asides) while preserving much of the archaic flavor.

Exciting required reading!
Great book. Words were a little difficult for my 5th grader so we read it together for her summer required reading and both really enjoyed it!

Perfect for middle school
My middle-school aged students absolutely LOVED this story. It's an EXCELLENT read, especially for boys, who relate immediately to the battle scenes. It's a fantastic epic, a great literary resource (especially in introducing students to how language has changed over time and also to view the earliest existing copies of the story digitized online), and an incredibly good storyline for talking about character traits and those traits which are admirable for us to imitate and strive for, and those which we should avoid. For an educator, this would make a fantastic cross-curricular resource and has many aspects which could utilize technology in the classroom.

Bravo
I read this to my 5 year old over the course of a week and we were both totally riveted! This was my first foray into the Beowulf tale... one of these days, I’ll get around to reading the Heaney translation, but meanwhile I feel like this version is perfectly sufficient. The language was rich and beautiful, definitely had a seductively strange Anglo-Saxon feel that was still totally accessible to my kindergarten-aged son. He was deeply engaged from start to finish!

Just Okay
I bought this for my son (12 yrs old) because of the great reviews....but he was bored. It was over-simplified and well, I guess after reading other novels, he just thought the plot was boring and predictable.

Book Review of Brilliant Beowulf By Michel Morpurgo
Beowulf is a fantastic book with EYE-POPPING features. This make-belief book is set in the deadly depths of Denmark around 400 AD, an especially troubling era. The main character is as brave as brass (Beowulf he was called) because on countless attempts he saved King Hrothgar and his city Heorot from at first a blood thirsty monster and next the monster's sea-hag of a mother and later Beowulf's own people. For one thing, I find this book is filled with wonder and excitement. This book makes me feel like I'm there. Beowulf is only one of Sir Michel Morpurgo best selling novels because it has lots of suspense making me want to carry on reading to see if the hero has met his match. My favourite quote is 'A formidable breeze brought then over the shallows' because it really describes the scene and it paints a picture in your head and only GREAT books do that!Beowulf is an extraordinary book for children aged 9+.Would I recommend it to a friend? YES,YES,YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Beowulf is a Viking legend so if you like legends you should look no further and buy this book because Beowulf is the book for you. However, if you don't like legends than look on!By Poppy L, age 9
