If the object was pure iron or steel (not stainless), perfectly flat, and balanced maybe. But as we all know the things we need to pick up are usually irregularly shaped and sometimes made of mixed metals. I was able to lift a hand barbell with 7 lbs of plates plus about 2 lbs of bar and knobs by putting the magnet on the end of the bar which is chromed. I consider that adequate for a magnet of this size. And lets face it most of the things we want to retrieve with this are going to be much lighter. Pulling capacity is meaningless -- it's totally dependent on amt of friction.** A: Can't help you much with that as my need and use for it was to move the fuel indicator gauge lever behind my Buick Park Avenue's dashboard plastic, which had frozen after a new battery was put in.
