hmmm
If this movie is from 2018, then my unborn son was born in 1918. I was in denial at first; I was like 'I've always thought about making a movie with all old equipment in order to make a new "old" movie. While it's fun watching Crocodile Dundee try his hand at wrestling mobsters and crooked cops, I would appreciate fewer mistakes by amazon (and no, you haven't earned a capitol A).

Try It, You'll Like It
Hard not to like this movie: Full of action, full of unexpected reversals, and with a very satisfying ending. The acting is first rate, and the use of "Mission Impossible" special effects add a novel--if not always persuasive--dimension. On the other hand, there is a murkiness regarding certain aspects of the plot, or the necessity for the violence in certain scenes, including a car chase sequence which totally ignores the mortal danger to innocent bystanders. (Well, it's 1986, and political correctness is not all that prevalent yet.) Definitely worth watching.

why does Amazon list the year as 2018??????
I haven't watched it yet, it looks good. but it was pretty clear from the minute it began that the movie is NOT from 2018. Why does Amazon say it's from 2018????? it was made in 1986, which I discovered on imdb

you don't know who to trust
I like the reformat to 16:9. 5.1 would have been nice. I like the action and violence. They hired him because he was the best at what he does but that ended up being to their disadvantage. This movie is good fun. I like the shooting. I like the car pursuits. This was recommended to me by Amazon Prime Video in email. This was one of the four. Two I had seen and the other didn't sound good because the reviews were about the book.OOPS Looks like I fell for a recommendation that got me to watch one that I have already seen. I agree with my prior review.

Movie is from 1986, NOT 2018
If you're into movies from the 80's then this might be for you. I'm not - from the opening credits to the audio and special FX quality, this was annoying due to it being listed as a movie from 2018.

Underated Sleeper from the 80's
Great film. Decent Bluray. The film was never very flashy or slick looking. More of a docu-approach. Great score by Bill Conti. Great acting by all. Nice sleeper film to watch on a Saturday. The only things that date this horribly are the computer sleuthing scenes and the HORRIBLE closing credits song. It's so bad to have to quickly turn off the disc before it ruins the pleasure that came before.

A well enough done, fun film from the 80's
For some reason I didn't catch the promotion of the film the first time around. I supposed "F/X" was always too vague of a title for me, I didn't know why I was supposed to want to watch it. Finally, I've seen it thirty years later and it's a really fun film and I love the 80's nostalgia. The clothes, the hair, the settings and all in all I enjoyed the story.

Great 80's Thriller but this BD lack compared to US release
Australian BD release for the surprise 80's box office thriller F/X. Roland Tyler (Bryan Brown) is a special effects man at the top of his game, pretty much able to create any illusion on the screen from mobster assassinations to all out monster gore feasts. His unique talents bring him to the attention of the justice department, who want to fake such an assignation for a recently captured turncoat mobster Defranco (Jerry Orbach) to prevent his former colleagues doing the thing for real. Taking the job to prevent a rival effects man from taking his crown, Rollie soon finds that he is not the only master of Illusion as he becomes the new assignation target of the justice department. Not knowing who to trust, Rollie can only rely on his own wits and illusions to find the truth and stay alive, while being pursued by raggedy Detective Leo McCarthy (Brian Dennehy) who originally arrested the mobster.Decent picture (better than the DVD) although you can tell it's from a rather dated master, audio is also only 2.0 stereo. Unfortunately there are no special features which given the Australian release (and stars home country) makes it a bit disappointing.Should you want a bit better image, audio, special features and have access to a multi-region BD player I would recommend the USA release.

not your average Joe getting involved in the extremely dangerous
You have a special effects guy (Brown) that everyone knows is a genius, the best alive. He is fine and busy professionally, then is asked to do a public service for the FBI, whose team of operatives have a supreme mafia baddie they want to "kill" for purposes of witness protection. There is also a difficult, embittered cop (Dennehy) out to get the mafia baddie after having spent much of his career chasing him. Suddenly the f/x guy finds himself in way over his head, in danger of getting killed himself but unsure who, if anyone, he can trust. What does he do? He plots a revenge in just the way that throws everyone off by their assumptions, their perceptions, such as the sounds that he can emit in a house to make people think he isn't where he is or the mirror he sets up in a doorway. Perfect illusions, but used in ways that nobody would be able to guess - unless they had time to think instead of immediately react. And it is executed to perfection. This is a promising plot as the viewer cannot guess what he is really doing either, until after a spectacular coup that is also funny. Now, this was in danger of seeming silly, particularly in that nothing goes wrong but goes according to plan, so the producers got absolutely first rate actors to get the viewer to believe them, and for the time I watched the film, believe them I did, especially with the anger that both the f/x impresario and the cop feel. And in the end only the cop figures out how the f/x guy is operating, adding a wonderful twist. It is truly masterful suspense and the pace and surprises come so fast that you don't have time to doubt them. It is great movie-making, like a film noire, to be enjoyed and not picked apart too much.Seeing this for the second time, it worked admirably well. While I can see where some would want to analyze it for realism, I would counsel just enjoying it for the ride - we all know that rollercoasters are safe, but love the illusion they are not. This offers just enough detail to work, though its sequels did not.Warmly recommended.

Fun and with enjoyable special effects
I remember watching this many years ago and enjoying the special effects. The main characters of Bryan Brown and Brian Dennehy were excellent, but I have to say that it was difficult to hear what the characters were saying because the sound level is lower than the background music.Or maybe I have become too reliant on Swedish subtitles! At least it was an early enough production without CGI. It was certain not worth watching again, and it did not seem too dated - were ALL the cars really that big?
