Great For Chromebook Via Ethernet or USB
A recent lightning strike near our home caused damage to some of our electronics, including a laser printer I had purchased here on amazon several years back.Now that I essentially use a Chromebook for everything, I wanted to get a printer that would work seamlessly with the operating system. (Printing used to be a weak point for the Chrome OS.)I learned that printers which are rated as "IPP Everywhere" should virtually be "plug and play" when used with the latest Chrome OS.Since amazon (not a third party vendor) was selling the "renewed" M404n at a hefty discount from "new", I decided to take a chance since the return policy is a generous 90 days.Printer arrived yesterday and it couldn't have been easier to install. The Chromebook immediately recognized the printer whether connected via ethernet cable to my router...or via USB. All that needs to be done is to go to the "printers" section in the settings menu for the Chrome OS and "save" the printer.I couldn't be happier with the ease of setup, (no drivers to download, no hardware or software updates to install), and the quality of the pages I printed out was excellent.My printer was obviously not laying around on a shelf for long as it had a manufacture date of July, 2020. So someone either decided recently it wasn't for them or had some other reason to return it. Checked the toner level and it was at 100%...with less than 20 total pages printed, including my test runs.Obviously, I can's speak to how well it will perform going forward or its reliability after only one day on the job, but I will come back and amend this review if necessary.Be aware that the product manuals were not in the box, so you may have to download the manuals from the HP support website. Also, the USB and ethernet cables are the purchaser's responsibility.I'm glad I took the chance to buy renewed from amazon, both for the price and the quality of the printer received, which appears to be as good as new.Chromebook owners...rejoice!

No Toner Cartridge.
The printer came with no toner cartridge. The 3rd picture shows what is in the box. It shows a printer, cable, getting started guide and genuine HP toner cartridge 58A.

Revised from "Junk" to "NOT TOO BAD"
My original review Was ONE STAR. After using the printer for a while, it hasn't spewed any "hash" (printer job control language errors) since te first time it happened. I've revised to a 4-star. Original review: I bought this "refurbished" HP 404n because it was a good price and I had several toner cartridges from my previous, old 404n left over. Just like my old one (which eventually stopped working), this one also OCCASIONALLY prints hash ($#^&*((&$#@) and keeps going until the printer runs out of paper if you don't catch it in time. It is too much work to re-box it and take it to a "return" center, so I'm going to live with it for a while before getting another. Don't waste your money - just buy a new printer.

Does what it's supposed to do without failure
I keep switching out all of our old Okidata printers with these HP M404ns at work. Faster, smoother and I have not had any issue with the 6 that I have purchased so far. I'd recommend.

Overall A Good Product
BAD: The printer came in a box that wasn't much larger than itself, so there was little to no padding on a few sides of it. There was one layer of bubble wrap on the bottom and plenty on top. It arrived unharmed, so I lucked-out. It DID NOT come with a toner cartridge or a USB cable, so I had to acquire those on my own.GOOD: The printer was VERY clean and appeared almost new. I checked and it had the latest firmware installed, which came out only 4 months ago - NICE. It had a page count of just under 5,700 which was also very nice and shows the actual usage of it vs a refurb where they reset the counter, which would be dishonest IMO.BOTTOM LINE: Good overall value for the price, but lost a star for not including a toner cartridge. If they'd have said it didn't come with one, I'd have still given a 5-star rating, but not mentioning it and then getting a printer I can't use right away was disappointing. Under Amazon's AI-driven "Looking for specific info?" section, there's a button for "Does it come with toner?" and if you click it, it responds with "Yes, this printer does come with a toner cartridge installed."
