What is b7 threaded rod? B7 studs have very high tensile strength and are generally used in high pressure & temperature environment like petroleum or chemical industry for flanges. It is generally coupled with GRADE 2H NUTS. . . . Note: B7 studs are very similar to B16Stud Bolts ASTM 193 with the absence of Vanadium. B7 Threaded Rod. These rods are made from a Chromium Molybdenum alloy steel and are heat treated to a tensile strength of 125, 000 psi minimum and a 105, 000 psi yield strength. They are used for bolting flanges, valves, and other maintenance applications where strength is important. Black Oxide is a conversion coating process created by a chemical reaction with the oxidizers and metal to form an integral protective surface. Application to ferrous alloys and metals begin as oxidizing salts react with iron magnetite, the "black oxide" of iron. This reaction creates a fusion resulting in complete integration with the metal and alloy it protects, adding less than 5 to 10 millionths of an inch to the dimension of the surface. An oil, wax or other coating is applied after treatment to give additional corrosion protection. The black oxide coating process is used in a variety of industries, including the aerospace industry for transmission and hydraulic systems, where the finish will be constantly coated with oil, or for other moving parts that cannot tolerate the dimensional change of a more corrosion resistant finish. This process can be applied to a diversity of metals including: carbon, alloy and stainless steels, copper, brass, bronze, die cast zinc, and cast iron. What are the advantages of Black Oxide Coating? (1) Dimensional Stability - Black oxide's success is due to its ability to give cosmetic appeal without affecting dimensional properties. (2) Versatility - This process can be applied to many diverse metals including: carbon, alloy and stainless steels, copper, brass, bronze, die cast zinc, and cast iron. (3) Durability - The finish will not chip, craze, peel or rub off. The only way to remove the finish is by mechanical or chemical methods. (4) Protection - Oxidized surfaces have an excellent ability to absorb oils, waxes and lacquers. This enhances the appearance while protecting the treated metal or alloy. Why are studs stronger than bolts? Studs provide the ability to obtain much more accurate torque values because the studs don't twist during tightening as do bolts. Because the studs remain stationary during nut tightening, the studs stretch in one axis alone, providing much more even and accurate clamping forces. 2H Heavy Hex (2H HH) nuts are a common high strength nut used with many different stud grades, including A193 Grade B7, A325, A490, F1554 Grade 105 and others. Heavy hex nuts are slightly larger and thicker than standard (finished) hex nuts. There are numerous grades and the heavy pattern is typically used for large diameter and high strength bolts. This extra-wide, extra-thick hex nut features increased bearing surface and thread engagement for improved hold.
