A CLASSIC
My mom read this to me when I was young & now I get to read it to my girls. Just pure nostalgia & a great story!

Tico's Story speaks softly...
The story is so well done, artfully depicting what many may feel when they are handicapped and have to depend on others. And when the handicap is removed, Tico experiences a new difficulty. It is all about transformation and being willing to understand yourself, give to others, and accept what happens with gratitude. How do you relate to a bird with no wings? I recommend this book for children and adults who want to develop tolerance and deeper understanding.

Great little story
My daughter came home from school talking about Tico. So we bought her this book and now she wants us to read it to her every night. It really is a cute story.

This is a wonderful story of kindness
This is a wonderful story of kindness! Tico is born without wings and is given wings of gold. He gives away his golden feathers to help people and is finally left with ordinary feathers, but is happy that he can fly and that he was able to make a difference in the lives of those who recieved his golden feathers, my Kindergarteners love this story!

Tico discovers he can do without his golden wings
this is beautifully illustrated book with a wonderful but subtly inserted moral teaching. questions about identity, sacrifice, peer pressure are posed in a short and simply written story.

Great message
My kids and I love the message in this book that it is ok to be different than other people and in fact everyone is a little different. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read that the kids love.

Doing good deeds is always the right choice
Leo Lionni books are classics and I am sad that I only recently found them. All of his books inspire the imagination of children and get them thinking about moral, or difficult issues (sometimes without them even knowing it).

Mixed feelings about the story message
Same story as Rainbow Fish, but told with a bird. My kids liked it, and it showed the bird gave away golden feathers to those in need which is a nice message. But I did not like the other message, that if you are different the other birds won't like you. His friends shunned him for his golden wings. Then when he gave them all away and looked like them with plain wings, his friends accepted him. They should like him the way he is and not be haters.

Completely wrong message
I love Leo Lionni and his books but this one actually shocked me. The story starts off nicely. But then Tico, who has never had wings, sees his dream come true and gets golden wings. He goes to share his happiness with his friends, but they immediately shun him. Only when he has given away all his golden feathers and looks just like them, is he accepted back into the friend group. Like I said, a shocking and dangerous idea of diversity and friendship to give kids. Sent it right back.
