If you want to see how pedagogical content knowledge (Lee Shulman, 1986) is applied, buy this book.

I used this book in a Master's in Math teacher Education course at SFSU. Boaler's views are very one-sided. She is pretty much a strict constructivist and shuns direct instruction. That view colors every segment of the book. As a result, our classroom discussions were equally narrow. This book was used by our professor to determine whether or not the teacher profiled in the book (Cathy Humphrey's, a friend of Boaler's)asked good questions of her students, questions that enhanced learning. Whether or not the mathematics was sound was almost beside the point.I would only recommend this book for teachers (middle school) as a guide for what NOT to do.

I bought this book for a teaching math methods class, and it has been fantastic! It shows how the planning and methodologies work in an actual classroom. The explanations are very insightful. It links the theory to the practice of teaching.

I needed this book for a class with the disks included. The description said they were supposed to be, but I opened the book and they were not. This is the only time I’ve had an issue with textbooks/cds. Very disappointed.

Excellent resource!!! Math education in the US needs to be restructured and this resource will help to light the way on that journey.

This resource is great for math teachers or any teacher who would like some insight in teaching math through the problem solving/thinking method. I had to use it for a course but anyone who would like some ideas would enjoy this book.

Easy and informative read. If you want to change your mindset around teaching mathematics, get this book! I love the DVD that comes with it. It's great to watch how the right question can engage students in math class.
