AA journey through irelands troubled modern history
Here's a medium-length Amazon review for *The Rebels of Ireland* by Edward Rutherfurd:---**A Fascinating Journey Through Irelandโs Tumultuous History***The Rebels of Ireland* by Edward Rutherfurd is a captivating exploration of Irish history that seamlessly blends factual events with fictional narratives. As someone who enjoys historical fiction, I found this novel to be an enlightening and engaging way to learn about Ireland's rich and often tumultuous past.Rutherfurd masterfully spans several centuries, from the late 16th century to the early 20th century, capturing pivotal moments such as the Irish Rebellion, the Great Famine, and the country's fight for independence. His ability to intertwine the lives of fictional families with real historical figures and events provides a personal and emotional lens through which readers can experience Irelandโs struggles and triumphs. One of the most compelling aspects of this book is how it vividly brings history to life. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and their personal stories highlight the broader social and political changes in Ireland. Through the eyes of these families, Rutherfurd offers a deep understanding of the Irish people's resilience and spirit in the face of adversity. The novel is well-researched, and Rutherfurdโs attention to historical detail is evident throughout. He skillfully balances the historical narrative with character-driven storytelling, making the book both informative and enjoyable to read. I particularly appreciated the way he portrayed the complexity of Irish identity and the enduring legacy of its cultural heritage. While the novel is long and covers a vast period, Rutherfurdโs engaging writing style keeps the reader invested in the story. I highly recommend *The Rebels of Ireland* to anyone interested in learning about Irelandโs history through the lens of a beautifully written novel. It is a rewarding read that offers both education and entertainment.---

Well Worth Reading
This book builds on his previous stories in the Princes of Ireland. It is well developed and sweeping in scope. His work is similar to the formula used in James Michener's works minus the opening chapter about the geology of the area. The action involves historic incidents with fictional characters. It can be difficult to keep track of the characters but there is a handy chart in the opening pages showing all the characters and their relationships. I enjoyed the book but liked his first book better. The chapter on the Great Hunger of the Potato Famine was of particular interest as my paternal ancestors fled the famine as refugees in 1847. The story of the famine is hard to read as it displays the callous indifference of people caught up in tragic circumstances. It is worth the effort to read this if only as a reminder of how fast a civilization can break down without human compassion.

Excellent history of the beginnings of the conflict with the English.
Anyone with Irish blood that knows something of their family's history will have a new understanding of the Irish struggles with the English.

A Truly Irish Tale Wonderfully Told
Edward Rutherford has outdone himself. After I read this book, I read his "London" and whereas it is a beautifully written book, it didn't really compare to "The Rebels of Ireland". Rutherford captures the culture that is uniquely Irish and objectively tell us what it was like to be Irish under English domination. England has never understood the beauty of the Irish culture. It is beyond them and that is sad for them. We spent some time wandering through the Wicklow mountains and, as I read, I was taken back to our time there. It is a wondrous place. I also read Rutherford's "Princes of Ireland", an incredible book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Rutherford is truly similar to James Michener, a long time favorite of mine in the area of historical fiction. Both are marvelous story tellers and both captured the cultures of which they wrote by living in those cultures and doing extensive and accurate research. In particular, I appreciated Rutherford's handling of "The Famine" showing that there was not a great famine in Ireland, but rather the starvation of the Irish people. There was plenty of food, but it was shipped to England and elsewhere as the Irish nobility and England let them starve. There is so much fiction about Ireland. It is wonderful to read an accurate and fair account of parts of the history of the so special island which is filled by a warm, loving, and generous culture that is built on family and neighbors, a relational culture that puts people ahead of wealth and never invaded another country. How many countries, in history, can say that. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a real interest in understanding the uniqueness of Ireland and its people.Peter MadisonCalifornia

Good insights into the ireland of now.
The story lines flowed well from the beginning and I did not really need to have read the author's earlier book on Princes of Ireland. I presume the time jumps in the story line followed the holes in the available research. Since I have ancestry going back to Ireland, I found the background information enlightening.

History ๐๐ป๐๐ป- plot๐๐ป๐๐ป
Rutherfurd takes the reader down through the centuries explaining in detail the Irish history and gives a vivid account by doing so. Excellent. However, the plot consisting of various century long stories of numerous families is far from convincing. The characters stay one dimensional throughout, even when they get to face their demise, they leave the reader untouched. Too many characters only serving the purpose of explaining Irelandโs history.

Storia
