Soft Qigong To Aid Recovery
A lot of good material in the book on back structure and how to recover from injury using soft Qigong techniques. I used these in conjunction with my physical therapy stretches and exercises to aid the recovery process. Note there is no magic involved in either. Recovering from back issues takes time and persistent practice for healing. If you are willing to put in the work then this book can help.

Good safe exercises
This is a good, well-illustrated book about the nature and sources of back pain in the nerves, muscles, and skeletal system, along with a number of well explained back mobility exercises drawn from white crane qigong.

I tried these exercises and found relief! Aaaaah!
I have back and shoulder pain. Those of us with chronic issues, mine from an accident, will find this book and dvd very helpful. The pain-free back, 54 simple Qigong movements for healing and prevention, is a book packed with powerful healing exercises for back pain. I can say this for sure since I am doing many of them and I am feeling relief. I get a feeling a openness and release. It is an aaaaahhhh feeling. The exercises are easy to follow and invaluable for those seeking to reduce their pain. But it won’t happen without our own effort. Just reading or watching the DVD won’t help. You’ll want to get up and DO IT.Personally, I truly value information given by my GP, sports medicine doctor, or my physiotherapist. But this book introduces how the Chinese treat back pain. Its theory and philosophy, explained in great detail, with excellent diagrams and pictures, is fascinating. It is a different approach which I can intellectually appreciate. Combining the advice of both, Tradition Chinese Medicine and Qigong along with mainstream North American Medicine, is an effective way to work towards a pain free back.Since most medical professionals in North America are not trained to suggest or provide exercises like the ones presented in this book/DVD to their patients, those with back pain should strongly consider getting this book and DVD that will add into all the other advice you are seeking. You can’t give up… and this book explores alternatives. As stated in the book, most people do not recognize that pain is a signal from the body to inform the mind that we are doing something wrong, not necessarily that something is wrong. Even if something has been found to be anatomically wrong, often we address the pain with pills which only drives the pain underground. I know I've done that. With this book, and learning the basics of Chinese Qigong, you will learn how to better feel your body’s condition, learn how to train your internal vision, which can only help you when trying to become pain free. These exercises will help you to open up key areas of the body that are making your back condition worse. So, excuse me while I stop writing about it and get up off my butt and start doing some of them. They feel good!

Mostly theory. Light on the Qi gong
Mostly theory. Try 8 steps to a pain free back by Esther Gokhale instead.

An Excellent Resource
Dr. Yang provides a thorough overview of Chinese medicine and how to treat back pain in this book. It's clear he has studied qi and qigong for many years, and he provides evidence for his claims throughout the book. Understanding qigong is at the root of this book (and many of his volumes).Dr. Yang lists out the primary causes of back pain, and provides examples of how both western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine treat and prevent back pain. He provides many visuals with step-by-step instructions on how to safely and effectively alleviate back pain.If you are experiencing pain in your back and are open to looking at alternatives, I would highly recommend this book as a resource.

Helped me greatly!
This book explains the differences between Eastern and Western culture when it comes to the treatment of back pain. The first half of the book explains the different types of back pain, the different networks of the back and its structure. The second half of the book uses diagrams and shows proper breathing techniques along with stretching and exercising the back to strengthen it. I have been suffering from severe lower back pain these past few months and in just the 2 weeks I've had this book and accompanying CD of exercises I have noticed a marked improvement of how I feel. I highly recommend the book and CD to those suffering with back pain.

Once again, Dr. Yang provides much more than ...
Once again, Dr. Yang provides much more than a brief set of illustrations with which to begin a stabilizing and strengthening routine. This book is packed with illustrations, photographs and a narrative which takes you into the whys and hows of working with decreasing back pain and improving overall health through the Qigong movements contained within and by relaying the depth of Dr. Yang's knowledge as a tai chi and qigong grand master. The DVD included with the book is icing on the cake as you get to see exactly how these movements are performed. This book is a must for the beginner and teacher alike!

Wonderful book I treasure!
One of the most important books in my qigong collection, for two reasons: 1. Doing most of the exercises as close to daily as possible (once you learn them they don't take much time) helps me with otherwise almost intractable lower back pain, 2. I've been a serious qigong student for about six years and in this book Dr Yang is the first teacher who gave me a sense of qi as a reality flowing through my actual body, not just a series of interesting lines on a chart.
