Well made, easy to adjust.
This tamper is extremely well made and very easy to adjust. No washer is needed. if it is screwed all the way together it will register over 30 Lbs., the normal setting. These have to be adjustable because people use a range of pressures from about 25 lbs. to 35 Lbs. The spring will also eventually lose some of its power after being compressed enough times, therefore needing occasional adjustment. There are two ways to adjust it. the inner screw-on piece and the piece that slides onto the shaft and that the handle screws into. The inner piece should be screwed all the way in to start until the spring compresses after a few years, it might need adjusting. All you have to do to lighten the pressure is to unscrew the handle a little until you can see a thread start to appear. I am sure each one is a bit different. mine needed to have almost 2 thread groves showing until it was at 30 Lbs. To keep it there take a very small amount of three locks and apply it to the thread that is showing. This should be enough to keep it from turning and going out of adjustment. thread lock is not permanent and if you don't soak the threads it will just be enough to keep your setting. If you apply a small amount, it can easily be turned to break the "lock" and you can readjust it. It is far faster and easier to adjust it this way than to put a washer on it. Mine works perfectly. I tested it to make sure that it wasn't locked in place forever and then reapplied some to set it again. if the handle is screwed all the way in and it isn't giving enough pressure, you can open it up and use the inner spring stop to compress the spring more by unscrewing it, then setting it with lock tight and get more force. If you want to go and get a washer, that is up to you. I suppose you could also take the spring and put it in a bench vise and compress it enough so it has less force. If you do that and go too far, you will end up having to adjust it for more force though, and quickly compressing the spring might not last completely. Noi spring steel will go back 100% of the way if compressed far enough. So, there is an easier way. Due to the fact that the threads and handle are aluminum, they might not move much at all after adjusting them if you are careful not to turn them, but a small drop of Lock Tight will do the trick. I suppose you could wrap the threads with Teflon tape to make them stay in place if you would like to try that and are afraid of the lock-tight bond being too strong to break. (it's not) I considered making a little video, but it isn't rocket science.Good luck!

Mine was "calibrated" at 35-55 lbs. Otherwise, great.
This tamper works great with my delonghi, in the 51mm size. It should be noted that the pressure is about 35 pounds just as the spring starts to deform, and about 55 pounds when fully deformed. Test yours, I used my digital bathroom scale and a rubber mat. So I know that for a 30 pound pack, the spring needs to just deform, while a full push gives me an extra tight 50ish pound pack. I repeated the measurements several times, the numbers were consistent.Good feel, good fit with the Portafilter. I tamp, lightly with the plastic scoop that came with it, just to level the coffee, then I firm the pack with this device. Good packs, good crema. I don't regret this purchase. It looks good as well.I have always heard 30-50 pound packs, but that is not going to give you the same pack for different sized portafilters. I think that pressure per unit area matters, and that a larger portafilter would require more pressure to achieve the same pack. All I can directly measure is the total pressure on the disk. I could calculate the pressure needed for different sized portafilters, Alexa will give me the area of a circle based on the diameter and then you could do proportions. I'll leave that exercise to someone who has a machine that takes a larger than 51mm tamper.

Works good, fits my hand well
I am not a pro barista, I just like good espresso. This tamper is working well for me. It fits my IMS 58mm 18gr basket well enough to give me a good tamp. The handle fits my hand well. You should note that this doesn't mean it'll be comfortable for you. Everyone has a different grip and a handle you like may not be one I like. Further, because this is a spring-loaded tamper, it's going to be a little harder to keep clean. It's not a problem, it's just something to look out for. All in all, this is an excellent value, a good tamper, and works well for me. Your mileage will, of course, vary depending on your skill level, your basket, your machine, and, as always, your coffee choices.

You likely haven't been tamping your grounds enough before using this device
I never realized how much I should be tamping my espresso grounds. I knew that it should be 30 some pounds of pressure but this device ensures that you do it correctly. Easy to use .

Perfect fit, tamps flat
Sturdy device with nice weight to it, perfectly fits my Saeco Estro and would likely work with any Saeco machine. Been using this for a few months; so much better than the slightly rounded one that came with my espresso machine. Spring pressure is accurate, and tamp is tight and flat all the way across.

Inconsistent tamping results for 54mm Breville basket
I wish the base was 53.3mm or 53.4mm or 53.5mm. It is missing a tiny bit and does not cover the entire surface of the basket so you'll get very inconsistent results. If you are looking for a tamper for the 54mm Breville basket, I highly suggest you look for a tamper with a base of at least 53.3mm or higher. Trust me on this.

Good value! I’d recommend it.
This is the first coffee tamper I’ve purchased. I’ve been using the plastic one that came with my Mr Coffee Cafe Barista espresso machine and figured I’d buy a “real” one. It seems to make a little bit of a difference in the flavor of the espresso drinks I make. It seems to work well so far. No issues and good value for the money. Seems durable. It’s heavy and fits well in my hand. I have no experience with coffee tampers (except the plastic ones) so I have nothing to compare it to but I like it so far. It has a spring and it seems like you have to push down pretty hard..hopefully it’s made to be pushed down to the right pressure.

30 pounds of pressure, possible!
The media could not be loaded. 30 pounds of pressure checked. I used a scale and I was getting 41 pounds on average, overall it’s probably doing 30 because I had to hold it down for the digital scale to give a reading. It’s replacing a plastic press that came espresso machine. Overall I’m happy with it.
