Amazing Phrasing - Guitar: 50 Ways to Improve Your Improvisational Skills (Book/Online Audio)
D**N
Not for beginners
This book is 50 tabbed out phrases in different styles, and demonstrated with backing tracks on a CD. There is very little explanation about each phrase...just a short paragraph before each one. The phrases are intermediate to advanced. A beginner would be very frustrated. Fast phrases are played in both fast and slow speeds...medium and slow phrases are just played once. If you are already technically proficient, this is a good book. It does have nice phrases that will expand your repertoire. The phrases are called "ideas" and each uses a different technique. So it gets you to branch out. But this book does NOT teach you how to DO the technique. Only ideas on how it to use it. So you'd better know how to do it already!

Its a smart book and easy to understand and it amazingly covers a ton of styles and material.
Do not buy this book. I do not want you to benefit as I have by reading it. I do not want you to expand your vocabulary! I do not want you to learn how to build an intelligent solo. I do not want the competition! Stay away from this book!

No disc with it
I think its a good book for learning from. But no disc so its difficult to check and make sure i am playing it correctly by listening to examples.

OK for What It Is
Not a bad book, but very limited in its instructional value. Too much breadth and not enough depth to be very helpful.

Horrible online audio and so- so book
Very disappointing book by Tom Kolb. The book is rather disjointed, swinging from one topic to another, but my real complaint goes to the very heart of the book- the audio files of the exercises in the book. They are horrible. With many of my other Hal Leonard books, audio files come with Playback + which also you to speed up or slow down the audio file without affecting the pitch. The audio files for this book do not include that feature and the songs are played so fast that I can’t keep up just reading the notes visually . To make matters even worse, many of the files contain other instruments (unnecessary) that drown out the guitar. Wasted money.

This book has been very helpful.
Like the last reviewer stated, study this book. You get what you put into it. If you are a beginner, this is an excellent book to study with your instructor. If you don't have a strong background in music theory, than take Music Theory I - IV at your local community college. You certainly will get more out of this book if you do. Throw the CD away, you don't need it. If you can't read the rhythm, break it down and take the rhythm slow. Then slowly speed up till you got it. The criticism about left hand fingerings... that's beginner stuff. If you take it slowly, you can figure it out. If you put in the time, this book will make you a MUCH better guitarist. If you want to play like a great musician, you must practice like a great musician.

Amazing if you study correctly..
Do not simply memorize the licks.. study them.. ask youself what chord is being played as you solo over each measure. then ask yourself which intervals are being used in conjunction to that chord. memorizing shapes and boxes won't get you very far. Go deep into the reason why things work and this book will be amazing.
