If you live in Wi and don't want to roast coffee beans outside in January, this is pretty much your option.
Don't really know what other options there are that are usable indoors. I really couldn't find any. Everything else smokes to high heaven from what I read, and recommended to be done outdoors. That's not really an option up here. This unit is self-contained. I guess the controls aren't as adjustable as other options but again...INSIDE the house is a huge benefit. Doesn't smoke and stink. Doesn't set off fire alarms. There is some aroma, but it's not unpleasant. You can adjust the time. It does what it's supposed to do. I got the unit a couple of months ago, and have run it probably 15 times. No issues so far but if I do have any I'll update the review. I also don't have time to stand there and shake around the coffee beans to make sure they don't get burnt, with this you don't have to. I wouldn't leave it to run and leave the house though because yes if something fails there could be an issue with fire. One batch makes enough for almost 2 full pots of coffee (and I use a fair amount of coffee).Update 7/5/2015: Still using regularly with no issues. Wipe it clean when done. Makes a nice aroma in the house but zero smoke so yay.

so good, with this roaster
So far, so good, with this roaster. I have roasted several batches of beans experimenting with the roasting time. It seems for my roaster and the beans that I am using, the average roast time is 21 to 22 minutes. The machine is relatively odor free and is not extremely loud. So far I am very happy with the operation of this roaster. They are very adamant about waiting 30 minutes for the unit to cool down before roasting another batch of beans. I feel relatively confident in recommending this particular roaster, provided you don’t abuse it.

Did great for 2-3 yrs, paid for itself twice over.
We chose this roaster because of the smoke most roaster produce, it would still set off the smoke alarm if the kitchen door was left open but we also do dark roasts with a warmup and extending the time by five minutes but it allowed us to roast inside during the winter. I understand the new machines have a higher roast temp so a shorter roast time may be allowed for us. After hundreds of cycles (4/wk) and 100-150 lbs of beens the roaster motor slowed and stopped. We'll check into repair cost (tuneup/cleaning, maybe motor) and decide if we repair or replace with the newer higher temp unit. The single biggest issue we've had is simply cleaning the stainless steel screen, periodic oven cleaner and a soft wire brush did the job. The fact is it has paid for itself twice over in the savings of green coffee over pre-roasted, gave us fresher beans, and gave us the roast we wanted. The disclaimer here is we have not had experience with other roasters but this one did everything it was supposed to.

I love my roaster
I love my roaster, it has worked flawlessly in the time I have owned it. I am going on my fifth year of owning it. I use it every weekend to roast enough beans for home and work. I only roast enough to get me through the week. Maintenance wise all I do is make sure the chaff is blown out of it and every so often scrub the glass and chaff collector to remove the residue. I wish I would have bought a second one at the time. I bought mine here on amazon in 2010 for $125.00. I did buy an extra screen and silicone gasket set from a company called Invalsa. That was a precautionary measure in case of their failure. I so far have not needed to use them. Don't over fill, clean regularly and most importantly give at least 10 minutes between roast cycles to allow it cool down some, otherwise you can overheat the parts, burn up belts and ruin your roaster.

Love the machine, hate the lack of reliability. Five units each stopped working.
Love the machine. Terrible reliability. I am on my fifth in less than a year, all replaced under warranty. We'll see how the fifth one does. Nesco has been very good about replacing them, but this is pretty frustrating.Update: my fifth broke and Nesco is now refusing to replace it.FIVE units have each broken in less than two months each. So sad.

Excellent, Excellent
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent coffee roaster. Bought the SR500 last November and was thrilled with roasting my own beans. Loved the coffee and everything about it. The SR500 stopped working and really wanted to get one of those expensive ones but did not want to put the money out for it - so I purchased the Nesco CR-1010-PRR and have to say it is amazing. I did not think there was going to be much difference between that and the SR500; however, there is no comparison. I LOVE the Nesco. I recommend highly.

home roasted beans so nice with this machine.
This home roaster's strength is its filter which does a good job of removing smoke during the roasting process. Most roasters do not have this feature.. The roasting process is kind of slow which allows you to stop the roasting when its done to your liking. the only problem here is that if you like a dark roast, the cycle may be too long as too long a roast is considering 'cooking' the beans and not roasting. You can compensate for this by using less beans. The only other thing is that the unit can roast only 5 oz at most at a time, which maybe be too few for heavy drinkers.... but you gotta pay over $600 for machine which can handle more...basically, its easy to use and the coffee quality is very good.. not great.. but very good...in any case, more fun than buying stale coffee at the supermarket.

Mine worked for only 3 months
For as long as it works, this is a good roaster. Unfortunately, my experience, like too many others, is that it doesn't work long enough to make it worth the price or trouble. Mine broke after just 3 months. I dutifully shipped it back, at significant expense, and learned that it had a loose wire. I have it back now, but would never spend the money on it again and don't recommend that you waste yours. It's too bad that shoddy construction ruined such an otherwise acceptable product.
