A must read for all professional dog trainers
I recommend this book for anyone considering becoming a dog trainer or already shares the title of Dog Trainer. Below are some of the topics I found helpful and interesting. I refer to this book often (I have the kindle version) when I am struggling with a client or professional situation.Dog Training is not yet a "Profession". It is not regulated like the Veterinary Profession. There are a handful of groups that have put together guidelines, ethical agreements, and/or credentialing systems (such as IAABC, CCPDT, NADOI, IACP, and others) to try to regulate this unregulated industry. This is the good news. The bad news is group members are forever splitting the atom to win the "which is right" contest. Jim Barry does an excellent job sorting through the discussions, emotions, and arguments so the Trainer can make an informed choice or learn to create a dialog with others in the industry instead of demanding they are right.Another aspect to this book is the discussion of ethical dilemmas Dog Trainers face every day. Should you reduce pricing for a client that can't pay? Should you suggest re-homing a dog when the family loves the dog but is unable to stick with a training schedule and you know there is a bite waiting to happen? These are only a couple examples of the vast amount of choices the Dog Trainer has to face on a daily basis. How we handle these choices can make our lives as Dog Trainers easier if we have some framework with which to base our choices.Finally. Where does Dog Training (including behavior) end and Veterinary Medicine begin? Can a dog trainer suggest a different dog food or is that considered medicine? What is dispensing medical advice? All Dog Trainers should be familiar with these issues and how they fit into their own practice of training. Jim Barry helps open the doors to these discussions so we can have informed discussions with the Veterinarians whose territory we share as Dog Trainers.

Fun, informative, helpful
Highly recommend this for dog trainers and those working towards dog training. Defining one personal ethics is important for everyone, not just trainers. Fun and interesting ethical examples and lots philosophical history that I found easy to apply and easier to attach to my own worldview.
