I have used the remote to change speeds from low to medium to high. I didn't really see any difference in the temperature of my set top box, by changing the speeds of the fan. The device makes a low humming noise which cannot be heard with the box and tv on. So, it's very quiet and obviously only operates with the tv and set top box on. So no real issues there.
