## Description

Everything in C2000 + more chemicals, chem lab equipment

Review: Perfect, Amazing, Highly Educational (raise your budget and supervise to prevent house fires. :). - Excellent (Best) set that l I have seen for Teaching/learning real chemistry. My opinion was formerly due to the variety of chemicals and bunsen burner (sadly, not seen much anymore in sets). After purchase, my opinion stands but add newly due to the very educational manual compared to when I was 12y/o with a seemingly similar kit in ~1992. This set had a bunsen burner (fire was a major deciding factor for me in this purchase). This kit has a bunsen burner, so it qualifies as “real” chemistry to me. Word of caution: this is not meant to deter a purchase, but to add some “full disclosure” you won’t read on the box. Buy THIS C3000 set of you can invest an additional ~$150 for chemicals not included but are needed complete some of the 300+ experiments in the manual. Even with the added chemical cost upgrade, it’s worth buying the C3000 set if It’s still your choice after the added chemical budget. Many chemicals are included, but not the five chemicals listed below. Be sure you are achieving the proper molarity (Mol) of the solutions when handled by anyone less than college-educated chem students! Extra chemical costs: kit comes with about 5 empty bottles with accompanying sticker labels for the chemicals not provided. These are: 1 Mol NaOH, 3% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide), 2Mol HCL (those are the ones you NEED in proper Molarity (Mol) concentrations or be a very comfortable science person who can handle “dangerous by chemists standards” then very carefully dilute for the 12+ y/o person using the kit. I bought 12M (aka 12 Mol aka 12 Molar) HCL will cause the worst contact chemical burns you might ever hear about and is equally dangerous to the lungs if fumes are inhaled (“work in a hood”) concentrations, so know what you are doing if you order chemicals requiring dilution. Also will need Silver nitrate 1% solution, ammonium hydroxide 5%, ammonium carbonate (“Bakers’ Ammonia”), and 70% or greater isopropyl alcohol for the bunsen burner. The manual explains how to obtain the items I listed under “household names” I have tried to list (like “bakers’ ammonia” etc.) I bought exact concentrations recommended by the manual (in typically 1L quantities except silver nitrate that is lots more expensive...10 mL for the kit is sufficient, but likely to find only in 100 mL bottles) all from desertcart. Cost ~$150 in addition to cost of C3000 Chem set. Worth it anyway, so buy this set if budget allows. (I am not compensated or penalized in any way for my review or opinion of this and similar items). This kit’s manual has so much to teach and illus. are so good that I believe it exceeds the quality of lab manuals of many or all high school chem. lab classes (certainly better illus. Than my college chem manual in 2006). Good stuff! Color illustrations, good explanations, (lots of warnings that likely always seem irritating to chem-experienced supervising adults but will help teach good habits for the budding scientist...and likely mandatory for legal reasons). If I had to explain how dangerous this kit is, I would say that anyone eating or drinking the available chemicals (after the empty bottles are filled/labeled) might suffer or die if they consume an INTENTIONAL and significant quantity of the substances available in quantities that would be noxious and probably Require a forceful attempt at ingestion). The kit contains glass in all the places a chemist would hope to have glass (like test tubes etc). This is not a toy, it is a chemistry learning lab without the aforementioned chemicals and without the recommended safety environment that parents are obligated to provide. Best you can do in any home chem lab packaged in a kit by large margins (that I am aware of). Big things for safety to “real world” parents: eye protection (sunglasses) and fire precautions (smoke detector and fire extinguisher in the home) use proper supervision (at very least a teen+) who can properly use a fire extinguisher should be considered necessary. Disclaimer from me: adult supervision recommended/required! I once set my parents basement carpet on fire (intentionally) for about 2 sec. as a kid with my chem set materials using isopropyl alcohol and a spark. Isopropyl fumes burn, but not so much the wick (or carpet) right away. No carpet damage, but I wouldn’t risk my own house now as an adult, so should supervise appropriately. Teens with guts and knowledge can do unthinkably dumb things even when they know how it all works (I sure did). Still, I won’t deprive my kids of the magic of fire in their scientific learning/endeavors, so I stress supervised freedom to experiment safely, and maybe your kid(s) will have a doctoral degree in a science field. I’m a physician, so the scary carpet fire was probably worth it all in the end. :) Be careful, have fun, learn tons from this set!
Review: Wonderfully engaging intro to general chemistry - I purchased this chemistry lab set as a science-minded adult, and completed all activities; about 150 hours of hands-on lab and textbook learning. I was deeply impressed with quality and thoroughness of the instruction manual and the lab components. The set is very well-organized, the experiments very engaging, and the manual is a wealth of chemistry knowledge. I did have to purchase about $150 worth of additional chemicals and supplies, as described in the manual and in other reviews here; all easily available via desertcart and some at my local Walmart. Totally worth the additional expense, though. Highly recommend! Topics and experiments include: *Acids, bases, and salts *Halogens *Redox reactions *Electrolysis *Carbon and sulfur compounds *Metals *Alcohols and esters *Organic chemistry *Proteins and carbohydrates *Much more

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What are the chemicals that arent included, and how would i buy them?**
A: I have contacted Thames & Kosmos about this recently and here is there recent. "Additional Chemicals Needed for CHEM C3000 (due to legal restrictions or limited shelf life)* Approximately 10 ml of silver nitrate solution, (1% Solution)* Approximately 100 ml of sodium hydroxide, 1mol/L (4% Solution)* Approximately 100 ml of hydrochloric acid, 2mol/L (7% Solution)* Approximately 50 ml of ammonia solution 2mol/L (3.4% Solution)Silver Nitrate Solution, Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide can all be obtained through POW! Science!: http://www.powsciencetoys.com/Chem_C3000_Supplemental_Chemicals_p/c3ks.htm70% Ethyl Alcohol ( A form of Denatured Alcohol), and Hydrogen Peroxide are also required for certain experiments but cannot be included in the kit due to certain restrictions. You should be able to find these two items in the first aid aisle of most pharmacies. Ammonia should be obtainable from most supermarkets in the cleaning aisle. Generally speaking, household cleaning ammonia will typically range in concentration from 5% to 10%. The product labeling should indicate the concentration. The proper dilution of ammonia solution is approximately 3.4%, and this can be attained by adding common household ammonia to the appropriate amount of water (**see below). The amount of water which you will need depends of the volume required for a given experiment and the percentage of the solution you are starting with. **Important! When diluting chemicals, always add the chemical to the water, not the other way around. In general, if you pour water on top of certain chemicals, a reaction can occur quickly causing the solution to splash back up at you. However, if you carefully add the chemical to the water, you can avoid this. You may find it easier to create a larger volume of properly diluted solution and store it for use as needed. As an example, let's assume that you are starting with a household ammonia which is at an 8% solution. If you wanted to make a 4% solution from that, you would combine equal parts water and ammonia. By adding 25ml of ammonia (@ 8% by volume) to 25ml of water you would thus create a 4% solution. Therefore, to reach a 3.4% solution, you would need to dilute the ammonia by a little more than half.Once again, let's assume that you are starting with an 8% ammonia solution. If 50 ml of ammonia solution is required, you would need to add 21ml of ammonia to 28ml of water. (3.4%/8% = .425 -> .425 x 50ml = 21.25ml, or approx. 21ml)."

**Q: Where can I find the list of chemicals, etc included in each CHEm set?**
A: Listed as included in the manual: magnesium strip, sodium bisulfate, calcium hydroxide, potassium hexacyanoferrate II, sodium carbonate, potassium permanganate, sulfur, copper(II) sulfate, ammonium iron sulfate, potassium iodide, potassium bromide, sodium thiosulfate. A few common items are not listed. But, the manual also lists things you need to get elsewhere:Silver nitrate 1% 10ml, sodium hydroxide 4% 100ml, HCl 7% 100 ml, hydrogen peroxide 3% 100 ml, ammonia soln 3.4% 50 ml,along with some other common household items, the hardest to obtain perhaps being ammonium carbonate "baking ammonia" or Salt of Hartshorn or Hirschhornsalz. Good luck. I got the kit as an eventual gift, so I have not opened or used it. Various common household containers and bottles are also recommended. It is too big to deliver to an Amazon locker.

**Q: what are the best expirement and what chemicals do they need?**
A: The best and most exciting experiments are different for each person. You will find very interesting and rewarding experiments for everyone.

**Q: Are the test tubes, beakers, funnel, etc. made of glass or plastic?**
A: test tubes and beakers are made of glass and funnel is plastic

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ nice kit but.....
*by A***E on January 1, 2013*

The very first experiment my son attempted needed ingredients that arent included in the kit, so we are on hold until I can order them. overall, he is happy with the kit but a little frustrated that we are on hold for now.
