Q: I am trying to understand why they have a shelf life... what expires in the filters over time?

The molecular sieve, a form of zeolite, allows oxygen molecules to pass but captures nitrogen and other gases. The captured gases are then released and disposed of by an electric reversal of the materials polarity, and a new cycle of oxygen flow initiated. Due to some chemical changes in the zeolite caused by the reversal of polarity, and contamination by trace elements, the efficiency of the whole process slowly degrades over time, until a sufficient concentration of oxygen can no longer be performed. The exchange of new zeolite (in a cartridge form) restores the process to its desired level of efficiency.

Q: So my G5 unit was unused for over a year and now I’m getting column replacement notices. It’s because it’s been idle for over 6 months ?

Either sitting too long or the fact it is a year old. Both are indicators to definitely replace.

Q: How do I know that the new columns are working? I could not get the message that the exchange was successful.

I wasn’t sure my new columns were working either. Called Inogen 800 number and they walked me thru the setup.

Q: Does anyone have instructions for upgrading the ingen g5 so you can change air cleaners at home instead of sending the unit to the factory?

The inogen One G5 Colum Pair RP-502 I ordered came with directions and it was very simple for me to change. There is a video on U-tube also.
