Does scanner fluid ruin the negative?

No. It would be a disaster if the fluid ruined the negs. The scanning fluids, do as they say and make a world of difference to each scan. I use the fluid from www dot scan science dot com There are other similar brands that work aswell - without resorting to the “oil” of the past. Just use the suggested gear at the website I mentioned. Such as Mylar film, squeegee, etc to get all the bubbles out and remove the excess fluid - before putting the mount on top of your Epson flatbed to scan. (Don’t get fluid in your expensive scanner).
