The setup was pure high concept: hunky, brooding Ryan (Benjamin McKenzie) was a good kid from Chino starting to go bad, and thanks to the interference of his lawyer, Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher), finds himself whisked away from the wrong side of the tracks to the mansions and manicured lawns of Orange County. Soon, Ryan finds himself living in the Cohens' pool house, involved with troubled rich girl Marissa (Mischa Barton), and bristling against the societal confines of his new home, as the people may be richer but they're just as screwed up as anyone else. Still, somehow, he manages to bring out the humanity of the superficial people around him, and they become all the better for knowing him. Okay, enough with the Beverly Hills, 90210 scenario--what The O.C. turned out to be was the most addictive TV soap in recent memory, and one with a brain to boot. Smarter than Melrose Place, sexier than 90210, funnier than Felicity, and not as enamored of itself as Dawson's Creek, The O.C. reveled in clever and hilarious dialogue (the pilot episode earned a WGA nomination) and quirky, eccentric characters. Most noteworthy was breakout star Adam Brody, who as Ryan's geeky newfangled brother-type Seth practically stole the teen heartthrob mantle away from Russell Crowe-lookalike McKenzie. Barton was a bit of a blank as the troubled Marissa, but her best pal, the blissfully superficial Summer, was played by Rachel Bilson as the perfect supporting character in a dizzy farce. And the adults, especially Gallagher and Kelly Rowan as the supportive Cohens, grounded the other half of the show in you know, like, maturity. Not that The O.C. ever forgot the fun that was to be had in TV-land, as most every other episode ended with a fistfight or someone falling into a pool--sometimes both. The first part of the season really plays on Ryan adjusting to life in the rich, glitzy Newport Beach as he falls for the girl next door, Marissa (played by Mischa Barton), befriends the Cohen's teenage son Seth (played wonderfully by Adam Brody) and is always teetering on the edge of going back to juvie. The adult stories center around the Cohen's, the next door neighbors the Coopers and Kirsten Cohen's rich real estate mogul Caleb (played by Alan Dale). The standout from that story in my opinion was Julie Cooper, played by Melinda Clarke, who does a great "bad guy" character. In the beginning of the series she was almost an over the top caricature of the rich, snobby housewife who only cares about money, gossip and how she looks. Clarke stole almost every scene she was in, especially when her character was basically the butt of a joke, and she became more and more central to the story. The first season almost suffered from doing too much too soon. They were jamming so many stories into the first season that it seemed to jump all over the place. They honestly probably had enough material in the Ryan "crossing the tracks" story, and developing that to get through the season without introducing Kirsten's sister, some of the other Chino characters etc until season 2. That said, the show did a good enough job of juggling it all, ending a couple of the story lines (even though it meant getting rid of a couple of the characters), and making things flow well enough that it did not get too hard to follow. Overall the show was very good and entertaining. It was at time somewhat formulaic, given the genre. The themes mirrored many other similar shows, but thew in a Westside Story vibe and made it unique enough that it did not just seem like a carbon copy. The writing and acting were very good. The Ryan-Seth relationship (and all the things that stemmed from that like the Seth-Summer-Anna love triangle) made the teen part of the show work, and Peter Gallagher, who was involved in almost all the story lines set around the adults made everything else work. It definitely had the guilty pleasure soap-opera elements to it. Lots of skin (especially early on) and the will they/wont they bounce with the Ryan-Marissa relationship, but it also focused on more serious subjects like physical abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, homosexuality, abortion and the seemingly required adult-teenager sexual relationship. As far as extras go, there are a few making of and behind the scenes features on the last disc, as well as some deleted scenes. There are also commentary tracks on select episodes. Definitely enough there for those who like to watch the bonus material. The show is certainly not for everyone. If you only watch documentaries and high-brow dramas, this is not going to be your cup of tea. But it is a show that blended comedy and drama, and touched on enough serious subject matter that if you are a fan of the genre then you will probably like it. McKenzie is also stellar, stealing many moments in the show with just the eye-piercing looks that he is capable of shooting at anyone at anytime. Equally strong are Peter Gallagher and Kelly Rowan as Sandy and Kirsten Cohen, complete opposites, who are completely in love with each other. Exploring their complex relationship as both parents and friends gives this show a great angle that is often not found in teen soap operas. Melinda Clarke as Julie Cooper is the perfect soap opera character. She goes from one end of the spectrum to the other in her range of emotions and her feelings. You never know what is going to come next from the mouth of Julie Cooper. Rachel Bilson, Mischa Barton, Chris Carmack and Tate Donovan also add very important pieces to the mix of The O.C. They are the people that help to shape Orange County, contributing in varying ways to the success of the season and to the lives of all those around them. This show thrives for many reasons. Of course there are the parties and the good times that appeal to the younger crowd. But to me, the success of this show hinges a lot on the adult relationships and the adult story lines. Creator Josh Schwartz has done a fantastic job of developing these very important characters that the fantastic actors have brought to life. Without Sandy and Kirsten Cohen and Julie and Jimmy Cooper, the stories that their kids work through would not be the same. It is obvious that the parents have a big impact on their kids' lives and that makes this show unlike many teen soaps that seem to often put the parents on a back burner. These parents get great story lines and really, Julie Cooper is the one person on the show that you love to hate. This set is highly recommended and hopefully the second season, which recently began on FOX, will continue the great story lines and great character development that we saw in the first season.

Very good show
The O.C. was the latest in a line of teen-centric night time soap operas that sprang up in the early-mid 2000s. It was what I would describe as a mini "it show" in that it was very popular out of the gate, and had some main stream exposure. Wunderschöne Kulissen, vielschichtig aufgebaute Storylines mit einem gewissen Soap-Element, liebens- und hassenswerte Charaktere und ein passend ausgewählter Soundtrack machen O.C. CALIFORNIA, im amerikanischen Original schlicht THE O.C. genannt, zu einem Highlight in der Serienwelt. Selbst Erwachsene werden bestens unterhalten. Die Serie ist viel zu vielschichtig, um bloß als reine Teenieunterhaltung abgetan zu werden. Schließlich haben die Eltern in der Serie auch Probleme. ;-) Schon nach ein paar Folgen ist man gefesselt von der Welt von Newport, im beschaulichen kalifornischen Orange County, kurz O.C., gelegen. Obwohl diese Welt nach außen hin wunderschön anmutet mit ihrem ständigen Sonnenschein und prächtigen Häusern am Strand, haben auch die hübschen Anwohner Probleme wie jedermann. Die Teens schlagen sich mit Liebeskummer herum, während die Erwachsenen zusätzlich auch noch Existenzprobleme belasten. Im ersten Jahr mutet THE O.C. noch nicht ganz so soapig an wie beispielsweise in Staffel 2, in der irgendwie alle Beziehungen und Handlungsstränge miteinander verwoben sind. Trotz des Pärchen-wechsle-dich-Spiel der jüngeren Figuren scheint alles noch im Bereich des Möglichen. Es wird nicht zu sehr übertrieben. Dazu sind die Charaktere alle passend besetzt und es gibt im ersten Jahr keine überflüssigen Figuren. Selbst die Intriganten möchte man gerne beibehalten. Was wäre THE O.C. zum Beispiel ohne das selbstsüchtige Biest Julie Cooper, hervorragend inszeniert von Melinda Clarke? Sie ist praktisch der weibliche J.R. Ewing von Orange County und ohne sie wäre es sicher langweilig. Den Schreibern ist eine wahrhaft schöne Scheinwelt gelungen, in die man gerne eintaucht und dabei den eigenen Alltag vergisst. Man sollte THE O.C. unbedingt im englischen Original genießen und sich nicht auf die deutsche Synchronisation festsetzen lassen. Nicht nur geht viel vom popkulturellen Dialogwitz im Deutschen verloren, auch die deutschen Stimmen sind mitunter unpassend und emotional eher lau angelegt. Beispielsweise ist eine temperamentvolle und laute Summer im Original viel süßer als in der platten Synchro, bei der viel von der wirklich gut dargestellten Gefühlswelt der Akteure verloren geht. Wenn man also dem Englischen mächtig ist, sollte man es lieber erst einmal damit versuchen. Die DVDs sind in mehreren Auflagen erschienen: Die erste Edition war noch im schönen Digipak mit Schuber zu haben, während die spätere Version in einfachen Slim-Cases, auch im Schuber, gehalten wurde. Die neuste Fassung konnte leider der neuerdings auf dem Cover aufgedruckten FSK-Plakettierung nicht entkommen. Für Sammler und Fans ist diese Auflage mehr als ärgerlich, aber wie heißt es so schön? Wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst. Die Extras sind nicht unbedingt abendfüllend, aber durchaus informativ. Besonders der Vergleich zwischen der Serie und dem echten Orange County ist faszinierend. Fazit: Wenn man sich die Zeit nimmt, macht THE O.C. schon im ersten Serienjahr süchtig. Mir persönlich haben es besonders die hübschen Kulissen angetan. Aber das ist ja nur der Tropfen auf dem heißen Stein verglichen mit dem lobenswert ausgetüftelten Handlungsgeflecht, bei dem man den Überblick hier noch lange nicht so schnell verlieren kann wie z.B. in Staffel 2. Man ist einfach gespannt, welche Hürden die Helden der Serie noch überbrücken werden. Suchtalarm ist deshalb vorprogrammiert.

In der neuen Hit-Serie "O.C., California" dreht sich alles um den Jugendlichen Ryan, der aus einer Arbeiterstadt kommt, in der Armut und Kriminaliät regieren. Bis er schließlich von der Familie seines Anwalts in deren Villa aufgenommen wird. Von nun an lebt er bei den Reichen und Schönen, direkt am Strand von Newport Beach in Kalifornien. Er stellt jedoch fest, dass der schöne Schein trügt. Während der ersten Staffel von "O.C." geht mehr als eine Ehe zu Bruch, Affären werden aufgedeckt und neue werden begonnen... Die Welt der Reichen ist keineswegs so schön, wie es scheint... Von Action über Spannung, Romantik, Dramatik und Humor ist in "O.C." alles enthalten. Sowohl die Welt der Erwachsenen (der Eltern) als auch die der Kids (Ryan und seine Freunde) spielen eine Rolle. Wer auf Strand-Romantik und kalifornisches Skater/Surfer-Feeling steht, wird dir Serie sicher mögen. Die 1. Staffel ist ein wahres Schnäppchen; man bekommt für sein Geld 27 Folgen in denen wirklich einiges passiert (jede Folge dauert etwa 50 min.). Es gibt eine tolle Weihnachts- und eine tolle Silvester-Folge. Außerdem liegt der Box ein Booklet mit Inhaltsangabe für jede einzelne Episode bei. Das beste Extra-Feature ist meiner Meinung nach die Möglichkeit, dass man während einiger Folgen auf dem Bildschirm Infos zu den Bands, die man gerade im Hintergrund laufen hört, zuschalten kann. Wenn also ein toller Song im Hintergrund einer Folge läuft, weiß man sofort Interpret und Songtitel. Geht aber wie gesagt nur bei ein paar Folgen. Ansonsten gibt es noch ein Making-Of sowie kleinere Extras.
