An Update to the Classic
I love that Steven Kellogg went back and redrew the artwork for this 35th anniversary edition! While it never bothered me as a child because I only ever remember looking at the pictures of Pinkerton (I loved the dog - I barely paid attention to the background images until recently), I'm sure there have been people who were upset about the robber toward the end of the book. Put your worries at ease! The author & illustrator specifically changed it so the robber is only holding a flashlight. I loved these books as a kid and would highly recommend the stories! The antics of the lovable Pinkerton are hilarious, and Kellogg's illustrations are marvelous. If you're still worried about the robber in this story, check out the other Pinkerton books for your kiddos. They're all fantastic (my favorite is Prehistoric Pinkerton).

Pinkerton Saves the Day!
After reading the reviews insisting this book will traumatize children for life, I had to write this. I've read this book to my children and, now, my grandchildren. They all love it! In fact, they've all wanted to take the book home with them, and I've had to purchase most of the Pinkerton books as gifts for them. Perhaps it's because they really have big dogs that keep the "bad guys" at bay, but I think it's because the story is genuinely funny. Good triumphs over evil, with a little resourcefulness on the part of the child. Poor, bumbling Pinkerton saves his family and becomes a hero! To believe this will scar children gives them too little credit. In fact, compared to some of the classic children's stories (Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs come to mind), Pinkerton Behave! is quite tame!

We enjoy all the PInkerton books
I used to have the whole Pinkerton series for my kids, so now that I have a grandson I wanted to read them to him. We enjoy all the PInkertonbooks, but you may not like this one because it has a robber sneaking into the window at night and the illustrations show he has a gun. It neverbothered me or my kids, but some people may have issues with this.

Warning!
Warning for parents:I wish I had read this book through before bedtime story time. Lesson learned. There is a burglar in this book (which I knew) that breaks in and holds a gun to a woman's head while she's in bed and threatens to shoot her and her dog (which I did not know). The dog then proceeds to lick the burglar as he threatens to kill them again. Eventually the dog drags the burglar out the window. We are a gun friendly home, but I do not agree with them being in a children's book, and especially so not agree with the graphic pictures and wording. When we got to the page of the burglar holding a gun to the woman's head, I stopped reading and quickly glossed over the rest, then had to reassure my kids that if a burglar DID break into our house, our Great Dane and other two large dogs would protect us, not lick the burglar.Hoping for no kiddo nightmares of a gun being held to their heads at night. Jeeze.

A Joyful Read & Potential Metaphor
Spoiler alert: An appealing, most fun example of discovery! Joyful mutual benefit of recognizing, appreciating, realistically & usefully addressing how a loved one has been & is, rather than how (however understandably & reasonably), we'd been WISHING they (already) were otherwise.

Love Pinkerton
Is this the 1st one? I think it is the first one that we read so many years ago when my children were small and now we are reading Pinkerton books to another generation. The stories are all great and the artwork is a huge part of what makes the books such treasures. You can't go wrong with Steven Kellogg and his Pinkerton books!

Childhood Favourite Revisited
This was one of my daughter's childhood favourites: we had to get it out of the library almost every week. It's been a big hit with my grandson, who loves the wit and humour and the subversive nature of Pinkerton. He has had no issues with the burglar, i gather which some modern-day critics worry about, just as he takes on board the dragons, dinosaurs, ogres, trolls and big bad wolves he meets in children's films and fairy stories.

Man muss Pinkerton einfach lieben. Ein ganz tolles Buch, nicht nur für Kinder ;)
