I installed it on a gate at the top of the stairs on my deck mainly to keep my toddler grandson from falling down the stairs and/or gaining access to the pool. It is well constructed and easy to install. Once installed, it holds the gate securely. It is lockable with the provided keys (2), helping to keep very smart little ones from figuring out how to operate the latch. It comes with everything you need to install. It is suitable for both left or right hand open. This is a safety latch NOT a security latch. I have seen a review complaining that burglers easier defeated theirs. This is a deterrent, not a security lock.
