Mother Goose and Friends Hardcover – 2008

This book has a great selection of beautifully illustrated nursery rhymes. You will love reading it to your little ones.

This a a beautifully illustrated book that every young child should experience. The artist's website says she took three years to create the illustrations for this book, and after seeing what she has achieved in bringing the nursery rhyme characters to life, no one should doubt the artistic effort to achieve what she has done. I highly recommend it for children and for adults who want to enjoy a lovely book of the old familiar rhymes.

Great book for a baby. Illustrations are breathtaking!

I was having a book baby shower for my sister and needed some inspiration. This BEAUTIFUL book was just what I needed! You wouldn't think the best part about a book would be the pictures, but we are such a visual culture that these inspiring illustrations made all the difference in the world. My children hated to give this book up and we'll have to buy a copy for ourselves, even though our children are all older than the nursery-rhyme-stage. This beautiful book is a treasure to be given as a gift and kept for yourselves.

The illustrations are amazing, and all young children need a great Mother Goose book! As an early education teacher, I believe this book is worth the money!

Sanderson has created a beautifully illustrated children's rhyme collection, but not all rhymes read traditionally and some others have been edited.For example, the rhyme "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe" is altered at the end to read "She gave them some broth with plenty of broth. She kissed them all sweetly and put them to bed." The rhyme, "The Queen of Hearts" only has the first 6 lines, thus leaving out two thirds of the full rhyme of how the King Hearts returns the stolen tarts and deals with the thief. Also "Old King Cole" is depicted as blowing through a bubble pipe instead of a smoking pipe. In this last example, it is a small thing, but still it does not depict the obvious traditional meaning of the rhyme. This is a sampling of some of the edits found within.I think many would agree that some of her alterations are preferable than to "whipping them all soundly," "beating the knave full sore," and smoking. If a more traditional reading of the rhymes is what one is looking for, then this collection is not so satisfying. Although regardless of one's preference, the point of the matter is that one is left having to guess if Sanderson's rendition of the verses are found in recent collections by unknown origins, or if she edited them herself without saying so.Thus, I give the book 3 stars.
