What Your Second Grader Needs to Know: Fundamentals of a Good Second-Grade Education Revised (Core Knowledge Series)

Good information for parents
This is a great book for parents if they would like to know the basics of the second grade curriculum. However, this isn’t necessary for a teacher (such as myself) to purchase because s/he will be teaching their school’s curriculum regardless.

Must Have supplement for Homeschool
What Your Second Grader Needs to Know is such a useful tool. This was the second book I have purchased, the first being for First graders. And I most recently purchased the 3rd grade edition. This book covers Literature, including many classic stories that are must reads for children, math, science, history and geography as well as art and music. The series has become a must have for our homeschool curriculum. While it isnt the only thing you need it is for sure a good start and will give 2nd graders the basic fundamnentals needed for their education level. It's the perfect supplement to have on hand.

Good material, but could be expanded upon
This book (and I've been purchasing all in the series) delivers what it promises - the content of material a 2nd grader should be taught throughout the year. What I think could make a great book even better, is if the book would also deliver more advice and suggestions on how a parent should go about delivering and enforcing the supplemental material. Activities, quizzes, and worksheets about the topics presented would help the child maintain the information.I've found that the "tips" on how parents should help their children given in the introduction to each section have decreased with each year in the book series. There was a lot more information given in the introductions for the kindergarten and first grade books than there is in the second grade book.I will definitely buy the rest of the series, but I will probably have to come up with ways to enforce the material presented on my own. Which is fine -- the book doesn't promise to do this, it would just be an even better book if it did.

Excellent guide for parents!
I bought this book while planning out our third year of home education. Our first year was through a public e-school, and we in the middle of the second year for various reasons. Now that we've got the hang of going it on our own, I am looking to round out her education. The author has very strong ideas about how schools should be reformed. I do agree on the school reformation, but I did not buy the book for that reason. Luckily, he keeps the personal views short. This book is not just a list of topics that children need to learn each year. Included are classic stories and fables; history, geography, and social studies lessons; easy to understand math lessons; as well as visual arts and music. Much is left out when teachers must spend time on remedial studies and teaching to tests. This book helps provide enrichment for families that public school. It also serves as a great planning guide and works as an addition to home school curriculum.I will recommend this to my home-school and public-school friends alike.

Excellent series!
So far I have 3 books in this series (2nd, 3rd & 6th). This resource is a good measuring stick for your child's education: if your child is able to fluently read and understand most of the stories in the LA and SS sections, independently or with little assistance, then rest assured that he/she is truly on or above grade level. The classic stories are wonderful and the social studies (history & geography) sections are really good too. We also enjoy the fine are and music sections. The math sections in these resource books (to me) aren't as strong as the other areas mentioned. However, it still gives a good basis of what your child should know.

So glad I found this for educating my children.
While this is not to be used as a full curriculum or should it be considered "everything you have to teach your child this year". It is an excellent tool for either home schooling or extra learning for a traditionally schooled child. The lessons are brief and to the point. It is set up to be discussed with or read with your child but you can also assign your child to read a few lessons/pages himself. It covers everything from poetry to various history and geography, to art and music, math and science. All in short "lessons" that can be read or discussed in few minutes. As a new home school family I use this for a basis to create units and spelling words. I also assign my daughter passages to read out loud to me while I am making lunch or putting away laundry.

You can get all this info online for free and a small amount of your time
I was very excited to get this book as we are going to start homeschooling this coming fall and this book had great reviews and was recommended to me in many hs groups. I have to say I don't know what I was expecting but I was let down when I finally received this book. My state adopted the core curriculum and I can easily find the standards online now, often with recommendations of materials. This has a lot of books and actual materials you can use but honestly after several months of research and looking at materials there is nothing new here. I guess if you are just starting to think about hs or want an in general what your kid is going to learn in a brick and mortar school then maybe this is the book for you, but I think a quick search of common core standards and then if you are hs filling in with material your child will be interested in based on their learning style you will save money and have something better for you. That is more work though. Just not that great in my opinion, especially for the price.

A Successful Student
"What A Second Grader Should Know?"The fundmentals for this book is speechless!!; I strongly urge any parent wanting the best for their Kindergarten through Second grader. Our son, second grader, was struggling with Reading; Yet, 4.0 Second grader. The poems, stories, and articles of literature gave him something to read everynight, as well as build up his reading level from first grade to second grade, and continue to progress and advance with math, science, and history learning materials. I stumbled across the book in the library and continue to check it out for three weeks until I decided to order from Amazon.

interesting collection of knowledge for a 7 year old
This is a very interesting read, Hirsch is flavour of the month with the Coalition boys, and primary education in the UK may well follow his lead, with a bank of core knowledge set for each year group. Bear in mind that this book is for the US market, so many of the stories, history and geography sections favour US topics. It's still worth a look though, and if you are a home educator, this entire set of books would be a useful skeleton for your child's tailored curriculum.
