Didn't Do Their Homework
H&C usually puts out a fine product that features clear photographs of detailed and focused portions of whatever they are covering. While the text is usually sparse, the pictures portray authentic items in a clear and attractive manner that makes up for it. While the photos in this book are clear, it is unfortunate that they show distinct errors. For example, collar insignia is consistently shown in the wrong orientation on both fatigue and khaki uniforms, both officer and enlisted. Sad, since checking any reference source would have corrected the error. Additionally, it illustrates that the uniforms were assembled for this work, as opposed to being authentic period pieces. No effort was made to have the models look like soldiers, what with boot laces hanging out and pant-shirt sets mis-matched in color. Another reviewer has commented negatively on the models, and I can only echo that they are a sorry lot that should have been left in the nearest public park were they were found. To give credit where it is due, the author did make an effort to portray uniforms seldom shown elsewhere. Of course, low collector and historian interest may be the reason for that. All in all, the money could be better spent on another book that does justice to the subject.Hueyman

An epic venture.......FAIL
I was looking forward to this book when I saw the announcement for it several months ago, having an interest in Vietnam and the uniforms of that ever-evolving conflict. Having several other books on the subject, and knowing H&C's reputation, I obviously thought that this would be a stellar book to add to that collection, as the author states he is using all authentic uniforms and gear from the era. True. However, after assembling a very nice representation of uniforms from all branches of the US military, he then proceeds to put them on the absolute WORST collections of models! The men, and one woman, depicted as US military personnel, serving in Vietnam, all look like a collection of pasty white, bloated drunks from your local pub! The look and feel of the photographed models, wearing the uniforms, looks, at best, like a poorly-done off-Broadway musical. The effect is almost comical in certain pictures, with the models "mugging" for the camera, or trying to play it up, often with an over-the-top presentation. Some of the descriptions of the uniforms, gear, or personnel seems to be culled directly from wikipedia, or google. Glaring omissions in terms of how SOME of the Marines are presented is downright insulting, not to mention in error. A few of the US Army soldiers are disappointing as well. All in all, buy Kevin Lyles book "Vietnam: US Uniforms IN Colour Photographs" if you want a GOOD representation on model studies of the people and equipment used in SE Asia. Shelby Stanton's book, "US Army Uniforms of the Vietnam War" is also a much more in depth study of this area.I know that this particular book was designed with scale modelers and figure painters in mind, but it is a sorely lacking, poorly executed attempt, and should best be avoided. Too many other books are out there, that are much more in-depth, or overall, better.Save your money on this one. And since this is only volumn 1 of two, one can only wait and see if the second book is better....but I doubt it will be.Just my two cents....RC
