My FAVORITE season...
Way, WAY back in the olden days of the early 1970's, when this amazing show premiered, I became an INSTANT and FAITHFUL fan, right to the end of it's run. When each season became available on DVD, I was delighted at the prospect of being able to collect all the seasons for my own. Both the audio and video quality of the DVD's seems to me to be outstanding in each season's realease.I was ESPECIALLY pleased to find that "Play All" feature" was FINALLY added on this season's menu. MAN! Having to manually start each episode in season's 1 - 4 was REALLY ANNOYING.Substantively, season 5 is my favorite, being the year where Margaret FINALLY gives Frank the "boot". I love the way her character is allowed to make huge leaps of personal growth in this series. The only serious critisism of the otherwise completely wonderful M*A*S*H* television series, is the fact that the character of Frank Burns was never allowed equal opportunity for personal growth; I think that if this HAD occurred, Larry Linvile, an AMAZINGLY gifted performer, might not have left the series. I think Mr. Linville's downfall was that he was so incredibly awesome at making Frank Burns, the total Jackass, come to life. The truth is, I've always chaffed at the way they locked his character (as well as virtually ALL other conservatives and/or career military characters who appear on the show) into a farsical, bigoted stereotype; e.g.: "all conservatives are adulterers, liars, hypocrits, stupid, war mongering, greedy, selfish, insensitive, disrespectful, abusive pigs that BLINDLY pledge allegiance to a flag and a country that 'everybody knows' should not have even been involved in Korea." The fact is, all those who call themselves conservatives and serve America in uniform are NOT anything like the Frank Burns character. The writers and directors- the powers that were the driving force behind the series, certainly DID have their little adgenda- and more's the pity. The picture they painted of the way things were then was extremely lopsided; and at times, even slanderous.Nevertheless, I, being a secure, FREE American, LOVE the series anyway, and will treasure it always. And all you other M*A*S*H fans, don't hesitate to buy this or any of the other seasons curently available. They are top notch quality. Can't wait for season 6 to come out!

Good Season
This was the last good season before it took a turn towards what it became. After Larry Linville left, I felt the show was not very good. Frank Burns was a great antagonist to Hawkeye. Charles was too much an equal, though David Ogden Stiers did a good job. The show lost something after this season.

Fond Farewell to Ferrett Face! Welcome Play All
Alas Play All is here! This is the best addition to the M*A*S*H DVD series. This season was Larry Linville's last as Maj. Frank Burns. Maj Burns was a wonderful character, but I think the series would have suffered had he stayed throughout the run of the series. You could only go so far and play so many practical jokes on this type of character. Kudos to Larry Lineville for recognizing this. For the episodes themselves, M*A*S*H has never been better, more convenient, and funnier (thanks to long edited scenes rarely seen in syndicated TV)! It's almost like seeing it for the first time. I was surprised to notice that many episodes had close to five (5) minutes edited out in Syndication. One allure of DVD's, in addition to the Sound and Picture Quality, are the "Extras". Other than the ability to take out the laugh tracks (Yes!), this has none. There are no cast interviews, no bloopers, no Director's/Producers/Writers Commentary, not even Cast Biographies. Even the insert is rather plan and has nothing extra to it. The episode description look as though they were written by some one who hadn't even watched the show. I was hoping for more when the DVD's came out. This is not complete in the DVD's fullest sense...the extras we've all come to expect in them. In that respect I am disappointed. But I am not disappointed in having a whole season on only 3 DVD's! I am not disappointed in the quality of the sound and picture (much better than the Video's from Columbia House and the Broadcast versions). My only other complaint is with their painfully slow release schedule of only two seasons per year. At this rate, it's going to be the end of 2006 before the whole series is available.

At last! They finally included a "play all" option!
I am collecting the M*A*S*H series DVDs as they come out (I've got seasons 1-5 so far) and am happy to see that, with the release of Season Five, there is finally a "play all" option. Why it took so long for the production people to get around to including this, I'll never know. But it certainly is nice to be able to watch such favorite episodes as "Dear Sigmund", "Movie Tonight," etc. without having to reach for the remote each time. This is the last season to feature Frank Burns. Season Six will open with the arrival of Charles Emerson Winchester, one of my favorite M*A*S*H characters. Frank Burns is funny, but, once Margaret gets engaged to Donald Penobscott, the Burns character becomes over-strained and tiresome. Perhaps that's why, even though I dearly love all of M*A*S*H, this season seems to go into a slump about halfway through. Looking forward to Season Six...

Great series...
M*A*S*H* is such a great series and I can see how it won so many awards while it was on originally. It is a heartfelt series with lots of comedy added in to make the audience a little more comfortable as it is a war series after all. I am glad I got this set to continue my collection of this series and it still makes me laugh to this day. I would recommend this DVD series to anyone (adults as it is a war show) and it came quickly and in good condition.

The Brilliant Mash!,
I now have the first six series of Mash and like other Reviewers I have to ration myself to watching no more than two episodes at a sitting! I love the characters and the way in which they interact. The mixture of humour and pathos is incredible. I first watched Mash way back when it was broadcast on BBC 2 and has unlike many programmes and series it has stood the test of time. They don't make them like this any more. It is real family viewing. I look forward to purchasing the rest of the set.
