Extremely, graphically disturbing and triggering.
I have enjoyed some dark books like this in the past. I have a guilty pleasure at times of reading about extreme power differentials, which this book promised to deliver. But this one crosses a line:There is a very graphic rape of a powerless young boy by a grown man.It was mentioned earlier in the book that the young boy had been abused by this grown man. But it is one thing to say that a young boy was sexually abused. It's another thing entirely to write an extremely detailed, graphic, extended scene of a child being raped. On top of that, there is a murder scene that is so incredibly vivid that I had to put the book down so I wouldn't throw up.This book is horrific. It will disturb any reasonable person, and it will trigger readers who are survivors of abuse and trauma. I wish I had never picked it up. This book put images in my mind that I cannot get rid of.If you're looking for books with rough sex, read the Masters of the Shadowlands series by Cherise Sinclair. If you need something dark with a kidnapped, powerless heroine, read the Crash trilogy by Drew Jordan.Don't read Captive in the Dark.

Still thinking about this five years after reading
I'm giving this book a 5-star review (very rare for me) because, according to Amazon, I read this series in 2013 and I am STILL thinking about it 2018. Now, I read a lot. About a book a day. So you can imagine how many stories I've read since this. However, yesterday I finished a series that will inevitably stay with me (A Girl and Her Ribbon, by Pepper Winters, in case you're interested) and that got me to thinking about this series. Why can't I let this story go? Here's the thing. I hated the subject matter of this series. I'm not a fan of the genre as a whole. Sex trafficking, pedophilia, rape, abuse, and misogynism are not my thing. I finished this feeling icky, even after the pseudo-"HEA" (sidenote- If you need a more traditional love story, you need to read all three books, but I personally could have done without the flowers and butterflies. It just didn't pass the straight face test given the context of this relationship). But none of that changes the fact that it was a darn good, well told story. And that's what a book is supposed to do right? Tell a story. Not necessarily the story you want to hear.In a perfect world, none of these issues would exist. But this is the real world and they do. And they are uncomfortable. And tragic. And part of me feels guilty that I enjoyed reading about such a messed up subject. Actually, I'm not sure if I enjoyed it, but I'll admit to being "captivated" (ha, ha) by it.And so, I'm giving this 5 stars, not because I loved the content. Not because I think Caleb is sexy (he's an evil criminal who should reap the justice his victims deserve). Not because Olivia is a strong heroine (she is very, very sad and her thought process is very, very scary). And not because I'm having some kinky BDSM fantasy (nonconsensual = rape... even if you orgasm). But it earns kudos from me for making such an impression that FIVE YEARS LATER, I still get caught up thinking about the "how comes", the "what ifs", and the "but whhhhyyys" of this story. Not surprised if I'm still scratching my head 5 years from now...

This review is long overdue. I’ve read this series multiple times throughout the years. This is the book that made me fall in love with Dark Romances. I will never forget the emotions that this book pulled from me.I was so confused at the end of this because I was questioning my morals, how can I love someone like Caleb? I remember reading so many romance novels after this because I wanted to feel the same way towards character. Lol, looking back now I understand that CD was written in a way that consumes you, breaks down boundaries and crosses lines you didn’t know you had. It will make you sick but if you push through you will find something pure and whole, you will get to read one of the greatest love stories ever. This series has been one of my all time favorites since 2012 and to this day I have never read a book like it.This book was perfect to me, so many times I tried to think of things that I wished turned out differently but I cannot think of one thing that I would change. My only regret is that CJ Roberts have not written anything since. This book is not for the faint of heart but I 100 percent recommend it.You will not be disappointed! My broken boy Caleb will forever hold a place in my heart❤️10/10

DARK AND DISTURBING ( A DUET)
Dark, disturbing, filled with suspense. This book is one of those that has been on my kindle a long time and I finally got around to reading it and I am so glad I did.I love dark reads for their ability to shock, keep you in suspense and especially when the plot has youe you gripping your kindle and flipping your pages eagerly.Captive in the dark was probably one of the first of its kind in dark romances, since then there has been a lot of books similar to this and I have read quit a few of them where captee falls for captor and vice versa. This is a story of a young girl, Olivia or Livvie chosen like a pawn in a game of revenge.A story of captor falling for captee and questions of...is this Stockholm syndrome or does the victim/hostage really fall for her captor."Each day I was more vulnerable than the last. Each day he stripped away more of my sense of self".Caleb's job is to train the girl, make her compliant, a slave.12 years of planning has gone into Caleb and the man who saved him getting their revenge and their only way in to his circle is to introduce a girl, a girl especially selected by Caleb, a virgin who will be trained as a submissive and to get her to the point where she is ready for them to offer her for auction.A girl pretty and a virgin, an enticing temptation for a wealthy and evil man who made his money from the sex trade, their hope is that their target will take the bait and give them a way in to get nearer to the man they seek revenge from for killing their family's.Captive Is the dark is dark and gritty has scenes of sex and desires and is not for the faint hearted like most dark reads. It's a slow burn to any form of tender relationship and understanding between Caleb and Livvie and near the end you can almost feel Caleb wavering, will he go through with his plan? Will he chose Livvie over the man who rescued him as a boy and trained him for this purpose as repayment for saving him?Caleb himself has a gruesome backstory, beaten and raped as a child until he was saved by the fman who he now feels indebted to."He was the monster no one thought to look for in the light of day"."There was just something about her, something he wanted to taste and touch. Something he wanted to claim".I am looking forward to the conclusion in this story and crossing everything for a hea for both Caleb and Olivia.Told in third person and a duet.

Depressing and dull
This book I found depressing. Most novels are uplifting but I think maybe it’s about recognising the difference between fantasy and reality. The reality being most people held captive and against their will are not falling in love with rapists. Without delving too much into my past I have experience of being in an abusive relationship for most of my life. Like an emotional slave. Yet despite the indoctrination I still knew deep down right from wrong. Justice and injustice. This book blurs those lines making the lack of consent appear erotic and the truth is it is not. There is not a single person who enslaves another soul who is able to truly love or care for another.I think this book is just sad. Sad and not interesting. I’ve met people who do far worse to their victims and it’s not exciting. It’s traumatic and I hope that anyone looking for the kinky sexual stuff notes this is neither kinky nor sexual in my opinion. It is just an opinion though. I am not vanilla. I am not submissive, I am very much open minded but it didn’t open my eyes to anything new. It didn’t challenge me. It depressed me.

Oh so good. Dark lovers dream
I frickin LOVE my dark reads & this right here is the reason why. Gawd I was so utterly consumed from the very first page of this soul sucking story that yanked every kind of emotion from me.Caleb is that anti~hero you love to hate. Arrogant, dominant, nasty, cruel. He is definitely the master of his craft & the master of his game.. Well almost.. Because we have Livvie, innocent, naive, beautifully innocent yet tough, focused & strong... She may be the captive, but she also yields a sensual & at times tender power over the man who stole her, broke her & forced her to go way beyond any limits she may have once had.Seriously this book is twisted, dark, deviant & oh so addictive. The game that is played out had me hooked, with the sole desire of seeing how it ended. What was to become of the lion & his prey.. I almost didn’t want to keep reading lol. Damn the ending gut punched me though & now I just need to read part 2!

COMPELLING but BRUTAL I love a dark book i can get my teeth into ...
COMPELLING but BRUTALI love a dark book i can get my teeth into but even i found this difficult to read at times,as this story was brutal, harsh and down right vile in parts but the pure brilliance of this Auther captivates you with the sheer magnitude of what can happen to make you the person you are and keeps you gripped in this story and how it unfolds.Oliver is a ordinary 18 year old girl going about her mundane life, she has no one special in her life untill she is plunged into a darkness that will change her forever, her life as she knew will be gone.Caleb is her abductor a man that has no morals and all he wants is revenge and Oliver (livvie) is the end prise after he has trainer her in the art of slavery. This story is about these two characters and how Caleb gets to kidnapp Livvie and keep her looked up to train her how to become a slave for the very people that helped him get out of slavery in his younger years. We should hate everything he stands for but as its Livvie's telling the story you get to find out the person Caleb is and god forbid you grow to understand him even though he is dispicable,i started to warm to this character even though i wanted to hate him. This was genius and brave of this author to take on a topic as dark and disturbed as this and getting us the reader liking the abductor at the end where i needed to find out how it all unfolded in the next book.Pure genius.
