The pump has a major air leak.
I installed the pump without any issue. At the suction of the pump, I have installed a short piece of clear pipe. And I can see if there are any air bubbles at the intake. It takes about one minute for the pump to prime, and it then pumps a large amount of water. When I look at the transparent lid, there is a significant air pocket. When I look at the swimming pool, there are a lot of air bubbles coming out of the discharge pipe. So obviously, there is an air leak from somewhere. When I look at the transparent suction pipe, I don't see any air bubbles. There could be a small air leak in the suction pipe, but if it were a large amount, I would see air bubbles in the transparent section of the suction pipe. So, the air leak must be coming from the pump itself. At first, I thought that the gasket was missing, and that I somehow threw it out in the packaging. So, I ordered another gasket. When I received it, I discovered that the gasket was actually in place. I suspected that the leakage was at the cover of the strainer. In order to find the location of the air leak, I ran the pump to remove as much air as possible in the filter. Then I turned the pump off and closed the suction valves very quickly. This meant that the pump was filled with water (except for a small bubble at the top of the strainer basket) and was under the pressure of about 2 feet of static head (about 1 psi). Then I looked at where water was dripping out. There was no leak at the gasket to the strainer cover, so the gasket was good (this was a pleasant surprise since I thought that this was the problem). There was a leak at the drain plug. I determined that it had not been tightened at the factory. So, I removed the plug, applied Teflon tape, and tightened it.There was another leak at the threaded pipe at the inlet (suction). When I installed the pipe, I used Teflon tape as directed in the instructions. However, it still leaked, and Teflon tape was not good enough. I tried to seal the leak with caulking. However, this did not work. So, I removed the threaded pipe, applied Rectorseal Pipe thread Sealant, and reinstalled the pipe. This sealant has Teflon fibers imbedded in it and is not the same as regular pipe dope. After this was done, I re-tested the pump - there were no leaks and the pump worked perfectly.Comment: If you have a problem with leakage and the Teflon tape does not work, use Rectorseal.Comment: the pump instructions should explain how to find leaks in the system. This entire process took me several weeks and caused great frustration.

Excellent pool pump.
Had to replace my 6 yr old Jandy. Yes I know variable speed pumps are en vogue, but they’re also twice the price. I really didn’t need or want a variable speed unit. Fairly easy drop in replacement- minimal PVC piping work (which is easy). Motor/pump unit is robust and quiet. No frills- just a reliable workhorse. Unless you’re the type that needs the latest/greatest/most complicated this is an easy DIY job.

Great motor so far
Only had running a few weeks. Works great, quiet, simple install. Will be curious to see long term use. Happy with quality of components. If I had a negative it would be the terminals for wiring the AC power. I like to use hefty wire 10gauge and it was doable, but not easy. Probably intended for 12/14gauge.

Value for Quality
This is the thirds pool pump I was forced to order until one worked. Don't waste your time with cheap pumps made some of which don't even have a brand name. Remember the old British proverb: We are not rich enough to buy cheap stuff.

Its a great brand but…
After almost 20 years with my original hayward pump and motor the motor finally went. I decided to replace the pump as well due to age. Specs are identical except for the new pump has 2” taps compared to 1.5” of the old. They do provide 2” bushings but this set up adds about 5/8” extra to both suction and discharge sides of pump. I was able to make the suction side work due to a little play in the pipe however the discharge is an elbow that goes right into the filter. Would have been atleast another 2 hrs of raising the filter and modifying some plumbing on the filter side. However, lucky me, earlier in the year that elbow broke on me. I ordered the new elbow from hayward. They sent the 1.5” elbow and a 2” elbow. The union side of this elbow is the same size for both. So i was able to screw the 2” elbow right into the pump with no bushing and it was a perfect fit. So if u have a 1.5” consider purchasing the 2” elbow with the new pump. Or hayward should consider added face bushing rather than hex bushings to not have this issue. A face bushing would not add additional space. The other thing i had issue with is the lack of mounting hardware. For this price they could toss in some stainless steel mounting bolts. Had to run out to grab some.Other than that its super quiet was easy to connect electrically, if you have electric experience. If not i would recommend getting help with that.I expect this will last a long time. Hayward products have never let me down

Make sure that when you hit the pay button if you want the extended warranty it's on there
For my pool it's a great product the only complaint I have is that I hit the button for the 3;year extended warranty but for some reason when it went through the extended warranty charge wasn't on there and I didn't get the extended warrant I called Amazon and told them the next day when I noticed that I haven't been charged the extended warranty I asked them to add it on and I'd pay the difference but they said they couldn't do that but I had to cancel the whole order and wait for them to return my money to order another one I couldn't wait my pool was down my chemicals would have went bad I really wished I could have got that extended warranty paying for it was no issue but the product is good it's working fine still like to have that extended warranty

Hayward pool pump I will always recommend
My first Hayward Pool pump lasted for more then 40 years quality and durability is remarkableMost likely it would still be running had I not forgotten to clean the basket. Because of that I burned out the motor .
