The StudBuddy Magnetic Stud Finder

This is a great product and a must have for anyone with stud walls. I had a more expensive electronic stud finder but this is a simplier and frankly I think an easier and more reliable solution to finding studd walls. This works with the use of magnets to find the nails that are holding the plaster board onto the studds behind. Its a handy size so just drops into your toolbox or even your pocket when using.

Brilliantly simple and effective. No batteries, easy to store and transport, very little risk of breaking. Within a few minutes of getting it out of the packet, I’d found my stud, marked it up with a laser level, and successfully bolted in some anchors. This is going to be a well used tool!

I was initially looking for an electronic stud locator however, kept running into reviews saying they could be temperamental and incorrect; and when drilling into a wall, you preferably measure twice and cut once. On further research, I found most builders tend to just use a strong magnet for locating studs as they've found that the most effective. Therefore, I settled on this little unit. Essentially, each StudBuddy a plastic housing around two strong magnets. They do locate studs, and grip strongly to the wall when they find it. The one gripe I have with them, and why I knocked off one star, is that they don't have a soft-touch back to them and so, when you're hunting for a stud, you need to scrape a bare bit of plastic across your painted wall, which makes me wince every time. This could probably be remedied with cutting a thin piece of velvet to size and attaching it to the magnetic side, and I don't imagine it would impede their function too much. Word of warning, they come in a blister-pack, so have a large pair of heavy-duty scissors nearby.

Bought this as we planned to mount a TV on my son’s bedroom wall and I knew it was a stud wall rather than solid brick. Am not the most DIY confident and really didn’t want to rely on tapping the wall and hoping I identified the right sound of wood versus plasterboard! This did the job perfectly of identifying where the screws/nails were in the stud frames and thereby allowing us to measure out where to drill. I followed the “waving it up and down horizontally across the wall” suggestion until it stuck fast to the screws which worked well as the screws were not all in a straight neat helpful line! Really good piece of kit which I am sure we will use again, so very good value for money. Especially when you consider the cost of a tv and bracket crashing off the wall!

Simple, works well. Finds metal bits like nails inside the wall.

It works if it's a skim on plasterboard. It finds the drywall screws. But it doesn't work with lathing. The plaster is too thick for the magnet to detect the nails.

My house was built in the early 90s and for the particular nails in the property it works really well. In fact I left it stuck to the ceiling a week ago and I almost forgot where i left it. Seems some people are complaining it won't find their screws/nails... but of course if you're looking for non iron based metals, magnets are never going to find them. My only slight complaint is there are 2 magnets in it, which help cover a wall quickly... but when you want to mark the ceiling or wall where the nail is, you have to remove the studbuddy and then estimate where the magnet found it. It's a little bit of a shame you can't mark around the magnet with some precision with a pencil or something. A small hole just in front of the magnet would be better... or at least 2 crosses on the top of the device would help visually mark it. It's a minor gripe.

Genuinely simple product that works. Used it to find studs behind drywall to hang flat screen TV. No battery required. No hit and miss. Just a simple magnet that finds every nail in the wall.

After trying multiple digital devices from the local hardware store (which either did not work or broke quickly), decided to try the old school way. These are just so much better! Would recommend to anyone trying to find studs in their drywall!
