Cossack Girl

I ordered this book after watching Marina's story in the breathtaking "14 Diaries of the Great War", and I suspect that many other Amazon customers arrive at this book after viewing this must-see series (available on Netflix). Having grown up during the Cold War, my understanding of Russian culture and history was warped by the demonization of Russians during the era, and it's invaluable to have access to first-hand accounts of history from Russian people themselves. While it's difficult to gauge the quality of writing of any work that has been translated, I found this book accessible and the story fascinating. It beggars belief that Marina did not encounter ongoing sexual exploitation or rape as a young girl among men, but it's clear that she suppresses and omits certain information that is painful to her, so perhaps that's what happened. This is a phenomenal story, and I'm surprised that some enterprising capitalist hasn't made it into an animated film yet. Highly recommended.

Bought this for research and also out of pure interest after seeing '14 - Diaries of the Great War' on Netflix, in which Marina's story is told. Really interesting read that gives a glimpse into life at the time as well as the horror, chaos, and confusion of wartime. Marina Yurlova, I salute you!

A very interesting account of a young girl's experience as a volunteer in a Cossack regiment of World War I. I was constantly asking myself, "Can this be true?" But Soviet scholars have judged it authentic, and it gives us a view of a particularly unusual life in wartime. Wounded several times and eventually admitted to an asylum with shell shock, she apparently recovered and led a long (hopefully pleasant) life.

Was fascinated with this girls story, which was a key part of the wonderful BBC production of Great War Diaries. The show was probably the best war documentary I have ever seen; and I wanted to know more about Marina. The book did not disappoint.

I learned of Yurlova from the Diaries of the Great War series and wanted to read from the source. Her story seems very authentic and I thouroughly enjoyed how her style almost seemed like that of a good blog writer of today as one can definitely hear her voice. I would love to be able to find her other two books (which are out of print and very difficult to find) as I want to hear the rest of her story after she got onto the boat to Japan.

an awesome story. i have always been appalled by the sheer insanity of the Great War. this is one of the most startling personal stories of a participant that i've seen. i also found an original edition (1934) to compare, and thereby guard against contemporary PC revisionism. it seems like this edition is un-revised, and historically trustworthy.

This biography helped expand what I knew of Marina Yurlova as portrayed in the series "14: Great War Diaries" ("14 Tagebücher des Ersten Weltkriegs"). Natalia Witmer did a tremendous portrayal of Marina. A very compelling and heart-breaking story.

An amazing story of a young girl thrust into the horrors of WW1, follow her account of how she became soldier, hero, pow, and refugee. It's a bleak accounting of war; don't expect a feel good story, but a cautionary tale for those who would glorify war. Amazing!

This is a truly remarkable book and it is a story that defies belief. What Marina endured and survived is remarkable and in a time when life itself was brutal.This would clearly get 5 stars except for one thing - it is sadly very brief and rushed. A lot of incidents are skipped and focus is given to other areas (i'm not into spoilers).Her story surpasses many true life survival stories that have received critical acclaim, it is a pity that more of her trials and dramas could not have been covered, history would have benefited more.It is a fascinating read but sadly very, very brief.

A most interesting insight into what life was like in Russia in those days. Full of gory detail, so not for children. A very good read.

... und weniger ein Zeitzeugenbericht. Die Abenteuer eines jungen Mädchens unter Kosaken während des Krieges im Kaukasus erinnern doch mehr an eine romanhafte Verklärung. Sicherlich ist der anfängliche Schutz vor Übergriffen aus den eigenen Reihen durch einen väterlichen Freund und dann durch die verliehenen Orden nicht ganz ungalubwürdig, aber schon zu hinterfragen. Die Darstellungen der Kriegsereignisse erscheinen realistisch.Der zweite Teil des Buches schildert den einjährigen Aufenthalt im Lazarett, wahrscheinlich wegen einer posttraumatischen Belastungsstörung - um dann mit der abenteuerlichen und z.T. unglaubwürdig erscheinenden Flucht durch Sibirien während des russischen Bürgerkrieges nach Japan zu enden.Da zu Beginn der Handlung feststeht, dass die Protagonistin überlebt, hat das Buch einen hohen Unterhaltungswert, indem der Leser sich von den abenteuerlichen Wendungen der Geschichte überraschen lassen darf.

Ich bin durch die Dokumentation "14 - Tagebücher des 1.Weltkrieges" auf das Buch von Marina Yurlova gestoßen. Ihre Geschichte wird dort als Beispiel einer Kindersoldatin dargestellt. Die 14-Jährige, angeblich Tochter eines Kosakenoffizieres, verlässt 1914 ihre Familie um dem Vater an die Front zu folgen. Sie findet ihn allerdings nicht und wird in einem russischen Regiment als Freiwillige aufgenommen. Nach mehrfachen Verwundungen erlebt sie die russische Revolution mit und flieht über Japan in die USA, wo sie später als Tänzerin Karriere machte.Soweit zum Inhalt, nun zu meiner Kritik: Bereits in der Dokumentation stellte ich mir die Frage, wie glaubwürdig Yurlovas Geschichte ist. Dort wird keine kritische Einordnung vorgenommen und ihre Darstellung einfach übernommen. Irreführend ist auch, dass dort suggeriert wird, es handele sich um ein Tagebuch. Tatsächlich veröffentlichte Yurlova ihre Erinnerungen erst 1934. Vieles, was sie schreibt, erscheint mit dem Wissen um ihr Alter (14 -18 Jahre) und ihr Geschlecht (weiblich) zumindest fragwürdig und es ist anzunehmen, dass sie reale Erlebnisse mit ausgedachten (oder zumindest übertriebenen) Episoden vermischt. Die wundersamen Errettungen aus scheinbar ausweglosen Situationen und die Begegnungen mit wichtigen historischen Persönlichkeiten erscheinen bei kritischem Lesen oft sehr dick aufgetragen. Mit diesem kritischem Ansatz in Hinterkopf ist das Buch durchaus spannend zu lesen. Man sollte es eher als Abenteuerroman, denn als authentische Erinnerung auffassen.

Pas de problème avec la logistique ou la qualité du livre.L'histoire est fascinante, un destin exceptionnel, mais en même temps quelqu'un qui n'a rien fait de spectaculaire, et donc très humaine, avec des qualités (courage, loyauté) et des défauts. Un point de vue neutre sur la guerre civile, de la part de quelqu'un qui aurait pu être très biaisé.
