The USBASP firmware is outdated. That's why you buy two in pack.Simply, connect one to USB and the other with the ribbon cable.Jump and set the J2 jumper on the target until both programmers light up green.Then simply issue the command, provided the usbasp firmware is in the current working directory.avrdude -c usbasp -P usb -p atmega8 -U flash:w:usbasp.atmega8.2011-05-28.hexThis may require to download the avrdude software and the usbasp firmware, first.Lather, rinse, repeat ...

Hook up fine but are difficult to communicate through at times. No sure if it is the AVR or the microprocessor. But it can be frustrating.
