For anyone interested in Korean calligraphy, this is a great place to start.
I didn't see the show, but as a Korean calligraphy student, I’ve found this book helpful in outlining the most significant calligraphers and their work. The pages from the calligraphic sketchbook of King Hyojong also caught my attention: I like peeking into private sketchbooks not just looking at finished, polished work. And as a fan of Joseon genre artist Sin Yun Bok, I was drawn to the calligraphy pages from his painting album too.As this is an overview of Korean calligraphy, it doesn't delve too much into technical details. We are told that Korean calligraphy was strongly influenced by Chinese calligraphers, but developed its own identity. But I still couldn’t tell you exactly how it is different. (apart from the use of hangul, of course)I suppose it’s a case of taking this as a starting point and studying individual calligraphers more closely. There are lots of large, clear photographs to peruse at leisure along with informative chapters. A great reference book with a helpful glossary and bibliography that I will refer to again and again.
