Love

When I heard Flipper was finally rereleasing their back catalog AND had a new studio album out I freaked out and check all the local records stores. I searched for weeks, noone had it in stock!!! Generic, Gone Fishing, and their live albums are some of my favorite all time records. I even like American Grayfishy! After reading so many positive and enthusiastic reviews online I ordered the cd and it, uh... kinda sucked! It was like American Grayfishy part 2 but minus the good songs. Generic had some of the best lyrics, catchiest basslines; Gone Fishing was a great experimental record pushing the boundries of what they were capable of; ofcourse all their singles are timeless classics; Public Flipper Ltd shows how cool they were live and has great songs they shouldve done in the studio also; Blowin Chunks has great feedback and noise; American Grayfishy atleast showed they could still write good lyrics and catchy rhythms. I'm happy they're still together but Love is weak. I hate to say it but only a couple of the songs are really that good and they're mostly towards the end of the album. The first 2 kinda blow. It has dirgy bass lines, noisy guitar noise, steady drums, and shouted half spoken vocals so it is Flipper so its still cool but get their old stuff first.

Woo-hoo! The return of Flipper. Reunion albums tend to suck but Flipper defies the odds and releases something good! While it's not my favorite Flipper album (That honor goes to Gone Fishin') it still rules and destroys pretty much all other music out there. The highlight of the album is definately the track "Old Graves". Seriously that track holds up with the darkest, dirge-iest (did I just make up a word?), and moodiest tracks of all of Flippers career.And yes, let me be the billionth person to point out that Krist Novoselic from Nirvana plays bass on the album.Let's keep hoping Flipper continues to release new material as well as draging out unreleased material from the vaults. For instance theres a great demo session from the 80s that fans in bootleg circles have been circulating for quite a while now that has some of the best songs the band ever made (If you've ever heard the track Kali you know exactly what I mean). Its time to put this stuff out as official releases!Anyways... Love rules. Flipper rocks.

The silence has been broken at long last. FLIPPER is back, and this album is ten times more satisfying than American Grafishy. Admittedly, it starts off a little weak (Be Good, Child! and Learn to Live sound like they were phoned in) but beginning with Only One Answer, Bruce Lose gets into perfect voice (which, as fans know, is perfectly awful) and Ted Falconi matches him with the slow-motion wreck of a guitar sound that we've grown to love. The whole album is a growling, heavy mess of post-punk goodness. For anyone worried, Kris Novoselic works out perfectly here. The basslines were always the most important element of FLIPPER songs and his talents are not wasted. Highlights: Triple Mass, Night Falls, Old Graves.

Just when i thought no other band could match Dinosaur Jr's "Beyond" for a "return to form album" FLIPPER release "LOVE" and it's brilliant!! - the old boy's have lost nothing when it comes to playing great punk and Krist Novoselic's bass keeps with the Flipper tradition of having a crunchy bass guitar which is vital for any Flipper album. All the new songs are great - my personal stand-outs have to be "Why Can't You See" , "Triple Mass" and the best song of all is saved till last "Old Graves" 9mins of perfection - this song is right up there with Flipper's all-time great's like "Ha Ha Ha" & "Sacrifice" - calling all Flipper fans LOVE is a must! - 9/10

2 stars for the noise factor, otherwise a band and sound that jumped the shark long ago.

With the (ironically?) generically titled "Love", Flipper frantically try to find a proper balance between their trademark shambolic and plodding delivery, and the polish of post-grunge-era rock songwriting. With all their effort invested in calculating something both accessible and "true to their roots", they miss the point entirely and forget that a middling, unexperimental and frankly boring album that's decent can be worse than a bad album that takes chances.It might have something to do with the fact that one of the session members in this album is from that overrated pop band Nirvana, but sometimes people just plain lose it.One of the low points here is "Love Fight", in which the bands tries to be a sludgy punk version of AC/DC with lyrics about "what our bodies want tonight." I'm not expecting the fiercely smart nihilism and rudeness of their early stuff, but this is pretty bad. The rest isn't so great either, with lots of lyrics about getting in fights and how growing up is tough, delivered with these awful toughguy, swaggering chain wallet vocals that the Hot Topic audience would eat up.Man. Flipper arguably transcended the genre with Generic and Gone Fishin', two of the most creative documents in punk rock, and those two aren't going anywhere... but man.

初期の混沌とした状態から比較すると 整然としたバンドサウンドを聴かせてくれます。勿論 フリッパー節は健在ですが。クリスのベースがクリーンなので 心地良いと感じるか、物足りないと感じるか 分かれるトコです。

伝説のバンドです。カート好きなら良いですしそれ以外のパンク好きなら良いです。
