Gord's Gold Glitters As Fine As Ever.
Still active at the age of seventy-seven, Gordon Lightfoot has had a career lasting over half a century, and it is positively littered with great music. This album was released in the mid-1970s, a double set that contains an album of re-recordings of his earlier material (when he was on the United Artists label), and a disc of his 'Greatest Hits'. As such, it is a brilliant introduction to Lightfoot's music. The 'Greatest Hits' set really illustrates the depth and variety of Lightfoot's muse - from the soulful, introspective 'If You Could Read My Mind', that broke him through internationally back in 1971 (at the height of the Viet Nam War - the song had great resonance with veterans of that war), through to the slinky and sexy 'Sundown', which kind of has him entering JJ Cale territory with aplomb, and then there are songs like the Bluesy 'Cold On The Shoulder', the strumalong 'Cotton Jenny' and the thoughtful 'Beautiful', 'Summer Side of Life' and 'Carefree Highway'. In fact, Lightfoot, if anything, makes this singer-songwriter lark sound so easy, off-the-cuff, that you almost overlook the supreme songcraft and melodic gift that he possesses. The disc of re-recordings serves to bring his older material up-to-date (well, to the mid-70s), and if nothing else shows that Lightfoot has been very good for a very long time! I bought an old vinyl edition of this - my favourite format, but on CD it sounds crisp and resonant. Love the Lightfoot!

Beautiful nostalgia
Bought this after hearing 'Sundown' on the radio again for the first time in years. Like all albums of collected works there are a couple of weaker tracks, but also some gems I'd never heard before. It doesn't have familiar things like 'Edmund Fitzgerald' but overall it is none-the-less worth having. 'Summer side of life' I didn't know and that alone makes me glad I bought this collection, especially at this price.A relaxing, mellow, and gentle collection of songs.

Great - what else can I say?
You wouldn't e considering buying this unless you wanted a good compilation of many of his songs - if you want the 'Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald', however, you need to go to the other compilation., and 'Affair on 8th Avenue' is missing.

Very good compilation.
When I read his obituary I realised that I did not have any of his work in my collection - this CD has rectified the omission.

Fine retrospective album
A fine album of earlier material, took me back that's for sure. But it if you are looking for examples of his earlier material.

Ottimo cantautore.

ENJOY,EVERYBODY !!!!!
