Trim your wick!! And it works well.
Yes, you must adjust the amount of heat from your candle by adjusting the wick length. If your wick is too long you will experience what many other reviewers have mentioned: a boil over. If your wick is too short, well, you won't have hot running butter. Also you do not want to use the candle that came with the kit. You want to switch to a regular tealight candle with an aluminum "cup" /holder. I will explain that in a little bit.The ceramic butter warmer is nicely sized. It holds about 1.5 to 2 TBSP of butter (1/4" to 1/2" cut of butter out of a standard stick of store-bought butter). When I say "holds 1.5-2 TBSP" I mean that at the half-full mark of the ceramic butter warmer it's about 2 TBSP of butter. You do NOT want to fill to the brim with hot butter. The warmer actually holds a lot more fluid volume but, once again, you do not want to fill more than 1/2 or 2/3 full. You need to leave room so when you dip your food you don't cause an overrun of hot, melted butter out of the bowl and that hot butter will be in instant contact with an open flame. Not fun. So, fill to about 1/2 full only. The amount of melted butter at the 1/2-full mark is just about right amount of butter for the entire meal. The pour spout did not work as well as it would have seemed. In fact, I wish this product did not come with a pour spout. You will be tempted to use the pour spout and pour. Yes, good for the food but immediately you are faced with a dilemma: hot oil/butter/cheese now dripping down the side of the bowl and you either 1) immediately try to wipe it up, or 2) burn it off with your candle as you put the warmer back on the open flame. Well, I prefer the wiping-off option as I desire less the possibility of fire. It's a bit annoying to have to wipe when you can't find your napkin to begin with. hehehe...Some other products do not have a pour spout. Good idea. This bowl is designed for you to dip your food in. It is not a gravy boat for you to pour stuff out of it. Sure you can accomplish that but I hate having to wipe. Unlike a gravy boat where is no open flame...there is definitely a problem here. You get my point. The metal wire rack is lightly constructed and it is not super strong. Well it's strong enough to hold up the bowl I suppose that's good enough. I am not expecting to use the wire rack for any other purpose other than holding up the bowl full of butter. The bottom of the rack does not have any sticky "feet" to help hold the rack in place on a slippery wood table or granite counter top. The rack is covered with a smooth, slick surface material that is aesthetically pleasing, but functionally poor. I'd prefer a stickier surface material to help the rack+bowl from sliding around. The candle that came with the kit does NOT have an aluminum cup as seen in a common tealight. Problem? Yes. When you use it you will soon realize that the melted hot wax is now embedded inside the metal candle holder and it's hard to get candle wax out again. If you had used a tealight, you could simply pop out the aluminum candle cup and discard it without leaving any residue of wax.Now the wick. A standard tealight has about 1/4" of wick. If you light it as-is you will produce a lot of heat. Long wick = tall flame = a lot of heat. You will definitely boil the butter to cause a melt down. Many reviewers have reflected this issue in their comments. What you want to do is trim the wick. I experimented with different length of wick and I found the 1/8" length is just perfect. At 1/8" wick the heat is just right--the butter is piping hot but never boiling. You can trim it shorter or longer, obviously. I tried one slightly more than 1/8" and it caused a "mild/low simmer" of the butter but still not enough to boil over. Also because the butter was no more than 1/2 full in the bowl. So, there. Trim the wick and you will have a perfect product. Too long of a wick you will have boiling over butter and butter that gets in contact with open flame will flare up, smoke up, or burn. You can also use a pair of tweezers to tug on the wick to make it longer or shorter on the fly. Say you think you butter is too cool or too hot, use the tweezers to turn up or down the heat. Simple as that. The ceramic bowl washes well in the dishwasher.Considering some minor improvements this product can work on, it is overall a 4+ star or 4.5+ star. The handle on the ceramic bowl gave that extra half star push to make this a 5-star product. See, unlike other butter warmers, you CAN grasp the ceramic bowl by he handle (it will be cool to touch) and you can temporally move the bowl away from the fire---say, passing the bowl around the table, or let it cool slightly by your own plate, or pour if you really, really want to.. etc. etc. The other butter warmers (without the handle) you will have a hard time passing around a HOT bowl of hot butter from person to person. This cool-to-touch handle allows you to do so much more with this butter warmer that you cannot do with the other brands (without the handle). So I have to give extra credit to this design superiority. And this product is equally priced comparing to other products. All things considered, 5-star product.

Perfect Usage
I used this product to warm my butter at a crab feed. It came with candles. The handles on the pot were perfect, because I did not burn my hands. It warmed my butter quickly and I was able to pour warm butter over my crab. Clean up was easy. It was small enough to transport to and from the event. I should have purchased utensils to go with it.

Great for shellfish
I wish we could give 1/2 stars as this really is a 4.5 star review. The ceramic ramekins work great in holding enough butter to get through a pound of crab legs. I had no problems setting up the pots with the candle. I do take off a half star because the candle is too close to the pot and it caused the butter to scorch a bit when most of it was gone. So be warned, if you hear sizzling noise coming from the pot, double check the amount of butter or remove the pot from the stand and let it cool for a minute or so. Good luck!

Like your butter nice and warm?
Quality of the set is pretty good. The base is stable and flat (no wobble on the table), comes with candles (which is definitely a plus), the butter warmers are ceramic and nice glaze finish. If I could improve on the product, it would be to make the base a little larger to stabilize the warmer on top. Currently, it is stable but you have to be more careful placing the warmer after you pour to keep it level. Instead of say, just placing the warmer and it's level, you place the warmer more carefully to maintain a level. Don't misunderstand, it is stable, the warmer will not fall over even if you place less carefully, it just won't be sitting perfectly level but at a slight angle. Please click YES if my review have been helpful to you, it will encourage me to continue writing and updating my reviews, and leave a comment if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer if I can be of help.

Fantastic value, classy, nice quality.
I actually purchased these items for making cosmetics. I'm making natural lip balm, insect repellent, and hand salve. I needed a tiny tripod to burn tea lights under my wax tarts. I melt them in a reusable tin, and the tin sits in my teeny tiny Lodge cast iron skillet.I used the crockery/butter warmer to melt and pour my wonderful lip balm.I was very surprised at the quality of both the metal tripod that holds the tea light (sturdy and well-designed, with the little stand a safe distance from the flame) and the stoneware crock. The handle is actually usable, and stays a bit cooler than I expected. The spout is really small, but the hot lip balm poured decently well.Overall, an extremely good deal and better quality than you usually expect these days. Elegant enough for a white tablecloth and some lobster!

Very unstable on the warming base.
I like the look and material of the warmers and I really like that it's closer to the candle than other warmers. However, a major drawback is that it is extremely unstable on the base that holds the warmer.. Because the warmer does not fit into the base and only sits on top, there is a high probability that the warmer will tip over and spill. Man husband and often sit in the couch to eat with our food on our trays and since these warmers move on the base so easily, it it is not conducive for this use. However, if you sit it on a table and don't need to move the warmer for any reason, it will be fine; however, if you have to move it you may be in for disaster. If the maker can find a way to make it fit stable in the base, this will be my favorite butter warmer set.
