Good Quality Bluetooth Self Contained Speaker.
For the price, this is a very high quality piece of sound gear. The sound is quite rich with a good balance of tone. Midrange seems a bit subdued to me. But again a high quality sound that is not tinny or cheap. It has appropriate bass and not boom bass. We have a Bose 10 speaker system and Bose subwoofer in our motorhome which has terrible bass boom. TDK made these speakers with bass the right way.In the past my only experience with TDK was buying high end cassette tape from them. That was ten years+ ago, but it was likely the best tape available at the time. The other better sound making devices I have in our house besides this TDK is a surround sound home theater setup in our family room that is about half Bose cubes and half Advent moderate size boxes with a Yamaha surround amp. The TDK has a slightly better quality sound with music than the six speaker Bose/Advent combo, but is of course one small box. The TDK sounds like one small speaker with good quality sound coming from it. The Bose/Advent on the other hand fills this medium size room with good TV sound but medium quality music sound. In our living room I have large JBL SVA 1800 speakers, a pair. They are hooked to a medium quality Yamaha receiver. No one would mistake the JBL's for the TDK. The JBL's have a huge high quality sound that when played in this acoustically good room at moderately high volume on jazz you can go in the next room and think the trio is playing back in the living room. 100 of the TDK's would not sound as good. Although I would like to hear what 100 TDK's sounded like for the experience. So I have been trying to see what this speaker is really good for. This evening I played my iPad with it using bluetooth and the very good quality Apple music app that comes with the iPad. Hooking it up with bluetooth means you can control the music from your chair. When set properly the sound from this App or Pandora set to high quality is very good. The TDK picks up the bluetooth signal and reproduces it well. It is a good background sound when you are doing something else with your iPad. I also tried it hooked to my brand new high end Android phone and was not so happy. Guess Android still has some work to do on their app so you can adjust the volume without getting up and walking over to the TDK. A problem Apple does not have. I thought about an hour ago that maybe a few of these TDK's in a system might be good for home theater, but then realized that each speaker is a dual pair and not an individual channel.I look forward to using this speaker when we need some outside music. Setting it up on a picnic table and using it outside would be one of the better applications. Getting this speaker system does make me think TDK is still a maker of quality sound equipment. Maybe I will see if they make other speaker systems.Dec 17 2013 - I have had the TDK a week or so now and would like to comment that if you are in the same room as this speaker it is of course directional. You can tell all that sound is coming out of one small place. That can be improved by placement. Sound comes out of this speaker from front and back. So middle of the room makes the sound bigger. And if you place it in one room and are in the next the sound is much larger. Still not the same as large high quality speakers but I have to say the TDK is a very balanced sound. No big bass boom. But solid correct bass. So once again, what do you do with this speaker. Well I can play iTunes on my lap top in my office and carry the speaker upstairs. It plays upstairs via blue tooth. However, connecting through blue tooth has a very annoying downside. Every time you turn the TDK on it hooks up to the last blue tooth device and activates iTunes or Pandora. It also means that unless you turn off your iPad that it was connected to completely you will not be able to redirect the blue tooth to say another device till the iPad is fully turned off. So you have to turn off your devices fully instead of letting them idle.Still 4 stars to me.

Lasted 30+ days and then broke.
1 month after purchase and it's broken. It sounds like a blown speaker now with heavy amounts of sound distortion/static on the bass notes. It's basically unusuable. It was never even played very loudly. But even if I had, this is a bluetooth speaker. How is it possible to play it beyond its volume range? (Poor engineering, that's how).Anyway. I paid $100 for this thing. It lasted just over 30 days, and I used it about 10 times. Also both the small rubber pads on the bottom fell off -- with very casual use. One of the rubber pads is lost. The other one I found but it's got no stick. Underneath is an 8 pin port, that apparently when uncovered acts as a passive speaker and changes the entire sound dynamics of the unit.Making matters worse, there is no support website or product servicing information online. This model isn't even searchable on the TDK website. So when it breaks, you're out of luck.Garbage. Move along.UPDATE: TDK sent me a new one. It's also garbage. He sound distorts easily. Bass levels are inconsistent. The device is very flaky. Really not sure what's up with the rest of these reviews. Fake?

5 Stars on a Price & Size Adjusted Basis
For its size and price, it is difficult to imagine anything sounding better. I was, frankly, a bit disappointed by the small physical size of this when it arrived, as I had never seen it in person until I opened the box. I assumed there would be no way this could possibly produce room filling sound with a satisfyingly full low end.It really outperforms its physical dimensions, offering very good sound reproduction right up to full volume. Full range music with a decent amount of solid, tight sounding bass results in this small brick moving a seemingly impossible amount of air from its rear-facing passive radiators. It's ridiculous to feel the kick from this thing if you pick it up while playing at a high volume. It owes some of its sonic prowess to magnets that are uncommonly large for this size device.I would have expected the splash-proof design to come with sonic tradeoffs, but it doesn't. That makes this ideal for listening to music outdoors by the pool. While I would still be open to something physically larger, louder, and with more bass--understanding that I would be trading off portability, convenient (since most larger products require 8 D batteries, and price)--this is a sonic marvel for its size and price point. It is that much more of a sleeper product, given that I have never thought of owning anything with a TDK brand since pre-compact disc days of audio cassettes. The audio quality and volume is such that it would make a very convenient way to add audio to presentations made on the go.I have not yet tested the microphone that works for speakerphone or audio conference use, so no comment on that.

the sound is amazing. Despite having a 5 channel surround sound system ...
So I've had this for almost 2 years now and figured it's time to write a review (albeit a short one).First and foremost, the sound is amazing. Despite having a 5 channel surround sound system with an attached Bluetooth receiver, this has become my primary speaker for music as it fills my entire apartment with great sound while allowing me to keep my surround on low while I play games, etc (when only minimal sound is needed). Although there is no equalizer, I feel like TDK has gotten all of the sound levels perfectly. I have a very diverse taste in music. Sometimes I like electronic, sometimes rock/classic rock, sometimes jazz, and so in and so forth. Everything sounds great here.My landlord lives right above me and has frequently gotten upset that the music on my "surround sound" is too loud when my surround sound system was off or very low, and I was just using the A33.I just recently picked up an echo dot and paired it with this. Now it's complete.Long story short, get this speaker. It's absolutely worth every penny.
