Complete Romanian with Two Audio CDs: A Teach Yourself Guide (TY: Language Guides) 4th Edition

In many ways, this course provides the student with the same things that other books and CDs do, such as dialogues, vocabulary lists, and grammar. This approach to introducing the student to Romanian, though adequate in most aspects, is deficient in others.The dialogues, though transcribed in the accompanying textbook in Romanian, are not translated into English. The student, however, should be able to translate the dialogue himself after studying the accompanying vocabulary list.Another problem is that the CD wastes space with remarks that are best confined to the book. At one point the narrator encourages the listener to improve his Romanian pronunciation by tape recording himself and then playing it back. The student is also encouraged to seek out native Romanian speakers for help in pronunciation. Really, remarks such as these should be confined to the textbook instead of wasting valuable space on the CD!I should also note the the English narration on the CD is in British English. So those of you who are put off by British expressions such as "flat" for apartment, or "chemist" for pharmacist may wish to look elsewhere.

I used this product for about two months prior to my trip to Romania. I've studied other romance languages and find this well organized and helpful. It certainly didn't make me fluent and if the person whom I addressed spoke English, they usually replied (in English), "What??" However, not once in any city did someone working at the bus station speak English and I was able to make myself understood with what little I had learned from this CD set. Had I more time to use it, I think perhaps the "What??"s would have been fewer. I recommend it and will continue to use it in my spare time just for kicks.

Love this book; an excellent learning guide and great material for the novice, or the experienced. I've learned quite a bit in a short amount of time. The CD's are wonderful! Highly recommend this book with the CD's. I initially checked it out from the library first and realized, I needed to make the investment to own a personal copy for myself.

Spending a few weeks with this language learning aid helped me have a wonderful solo trip to Romania. Some experience with other Romance languages will help you quickly adapt to the intriguing language and culture of Romania. It really helped me enjoy myself while traveling alone in Romania. People everywhere appreciate an effort to learn their language.

As a former foreign language teacher I am very fond of the layout and structure of this book. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it does not come with the audio CD, which is needed to be able to fully utilize all the lessons in this book.

I have the same course in a previous version with a tape cassette.Didn't use it much over the past years because as we all know cassette navigation is quite difficult.My need to learn Romanian arose recently and I decided to order this course mainly because of the 2 CDs.I did go over the first four chapters using the old textbook while waiting for the new course and I am very pleased with my progress so far. I even made my keyboard compatible with the Romanian alphabet by adding five vowels to the keyboard using a tiny sticky paper and adding the Romanian language in Windows 7 Ultimate as an input language and switching between English and Romanian using alt-shift keystroke.See the added vowels here: ă î ș ț â and in CAPS Ă Î Ș Ț ÂThe course arrived today and the book looks exactly the same except for some changes, but the hardest part was getting the CDs out of the jewel box and this the reason for giving the course 3 stars instead of possibly higher.It seems that Teach Yourself Company are always looking to give me a new challenge with their courses on how to take the CDs out of the jewel boxes. This time they really excelled into driving me mad with frustration and fear I might break the CDs.Finally I managed to get them out and put them safely into a normal jewel box that only needs a little push in the middle to get them out.I would certainly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning basic Romanian and the Amazon price was quite reasonable compared with other bookstores.

Teach Yourself liefert gutes Lernmaterial für Sprachen. Die Bücher sind immer sehr ähnlich aufgebaut, man weiß immer woran man ist. Das ist ein großer Vorteil für mich. Bei diesem Komplettkurs ist das Buch gut (352 Seiten), und die 2 CDs haben eine Gesamtlaufzeit von ca. einer Stunde (ein bisschen kürzer als übliche Teach Yourself Sprachkurse). Man merkt auch, dass es keine Neuaufnahmen sind.Alles in allem ein guter Sprachkurs. Sehr zu empfehlen.Inhalt des Buches und CDs sind gleich wie bei:  Teach Yourself Complete Romanian (Teach Yourself Complete Courses) , jedoch um die Hälfte günstiger! This book along with the 2 CD's is excellent. I have a working knowledge of French, Spanish and Italian (at least enough to get along in these countries) so this has certainly helped me in learning Romanian (we plan to visit Croatia and Romania next year) which also is a Latin-based (Romance) language. I have clearly not finished the book but it definitely takes you along sufficiently slowly to give you the feeling that you will be able to master it after a couple of readings.Each chapter provides a certain amount of vocabulary along with one section of grammar. It then has exercises with the answers in the back of the book.If I had one wish, it would be a full English translation in the back of the book of each of the conversations that appears in Romanian in the text and on the CDs. Some of them are quite sophisticated and more interesting than what you usually find but it would have been nice to have had the full English translation somewhere. I appreciate that this would have added addtional pages to the book.With this book, you really do not need another grammar book but I am finding it helpful to also have the Romanian Practical Dictionary and Romanian Verbs. Also very helpful is the Berlitz Romanian Phrase Book. It is fascinating having the same Berlitz Phrasebooks for French, Spanish and Italian to compare the four languages. Buna seara! or Buono sera! Take your pick!This was the last of a few books I ordered to learn Romanian. I could have skipped a few others!

Great product! Arrived earlier than I expected and everything was in brand new condition. The book itself is really helpful and not overwhelming, it definitely makes learning a new language easier. The CDs are so helpful because they allow for the correct pronunciation and it's really easy to just replay the CDs when I need practice.

Il problema con questi metodi di studio delle lingue è che sono noiosi. Il migliore e niente affatto noioso è il metodo ASSIMIL, Ma questo rappresenta un buon complemento e anche approfondimento perché è piuttosto completo nella grammatica ed è ricca la parte dedicata agli esercizi.
