NYMPHOMANIAC is the wild and poetic story of a woman's journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg). On a cold winter's evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushy branched-out and multifaceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents. Review: Charlotte ga - Blew my mind, it was that good. Review: Very entertaining - Great movie

A series of increasingly unpleasant moments between unlikeable characters
A series of increasingly unpleasant moments between unlikeable characters ... in a bleak setting. I can't forgive this movie for the time it took from me. I'm not usually a fan of watching train wrecks out of necessity, but somehow I stayed through the end. "I can't feel anything," says Joe at the end. Yes, that's exactly how I felt. So, was this film impactful? Did it succeed in eliciting some reaction from me, the audience? Yes. It took the joy out of everything. The bleakness of the film overtook me to the point where the (intentionally?) inelegant pornographic final scenes could only make me cringe. Is there a profound point to this movie somewhere? Perhaps, but honestly, not that profound. Maybe if I had the least bit of sympathy for any of the characters, I might have more sympathy for this movie.

Important
This is that rare character study which actually merits four hours. My fear was that Von Trier was going to push the boundaries of how sexually graphic a serious artistic film can be for cheap, commercial reasons. Upon reflection I see other reasons. He wants us to fully understand the loneliness, ugliness, and misery that this behavior can eventually cause. He never excuses or condemns this character. There are so many moments when 99% of women would have turned back, but this one pushes forward. It demystifies what is really going on under the surface, while still admitting there are no easy answers to "why." I predict this work be more appreciated as the years go by. It explores too many difficult truths about the way men and women see each other to be ignored.

Not a must see...
I had heard a lot about this movie recently so I was interested in seeing it. This is part one of a two part film and I honestly won't be watching part two. A young woman, Jo, is found beaten in an alley by an older man as he is walking home. He takes her back to his apartment where he nurses her and listens as she tells him of her story and descent into nymphomania. Its a story of addiction and the addict and while interesting its long, boring and pretentious filmmaking. It does have a great cast which is a shame because they're wasted in this film.
