Hi, I am considering this for an active 5th grader, can this specific design backpack hold folders, a lunch bag a big water bottle?

For sure. My son is in high school and this has the most interior room of any he’s ever had. It holds his laptop in its own back padded pocket, a gazillion folders and notebooks and textbooks in another main pocket, and even his basketball high tops and lunch in the third big section. Water bottle goes in side holder, and there are like 3 or 4 small zipper pockets in the front to hold alllllll the other things. It’s shocking how compact it looks from the outside too. And apparently Jansport is super popular again among teenagers; another plus. Highly recommend.

A laptop padded pocket in very back, Two more main pockets, and then a few small front pockets. But as far as big main compartments, there are three.

is it waterproof or weather resistant?

It is not waterproof. I haven't seen a backpack that is.,unless you consider an expedition grade true backpack. You could say that it is mildly weather resistant. The fabric is a lighter weight that other JanSport packs but is still is quality material. It is lined with a tight weave nylon material but this lining doesn't extend to the sides or bottom of the bag. I imagine that it will keep your books safe in a light rain as you're waiting for the school bus. I definitely would not set it down in a puddle of water. It is a beautiful bag and draws plenty of compliments. But, I would classify it as a student's book bag, not a backpack.
